I am just a mere onlooker…associated by wedlock to an alum who is still active in the community.

Possibly the best  in some time...

Covid pissed him off with the loss of a year and threat of losing another year.

He kids had recently graduated Cornell so not at home.

Most importantly, he had reached the magic 30 years as a NY state employee and locked in his pension.  Who wouldn't want to take another job and, who knows, also start getting your pension at the same time.

Don't things get stale after a long time and you are open to change.  West coast would sound fun to me.

Stanford needed him to save the program and they made it financially worth his while.

Exciting to hit the west coast at a high academic school (where you are an expert in recruiting that kind of kid), where for the first time in your life as a coach you get to actually offer scholarships.  Easy recruiting sell based on his prior experience at Cornell (which is why about 3 years in a row he had top 10 recruiting classes at Stanford).

On the UNC thing.  Who wouldn't want to move back to their alma matter where you where a national champ and still have buddies living locally.  That much closer to your children.  And, again, you are at a top 30 academic school that allows scholarships and supports wrestling a bit more than Stanford did.

I don't think this needs a lot of discussion to unpack.  Surprised the thread was this long

What are you, his spokesman? The idea that Rob Koll saved Stanford wrestling is unbelievably insulting to Borrelli et al., who hustled for a year to keep the team together, produce a national champ and raise millions. It was already saved before Koll got there, despite how much he wants to take credit.

When it comes to Rob, he's about as good as it comes. I don't need to comment on his acumen as a wrestling coach, but having had the opportunity to know him as a person, I consider myself blessed.  UNC is very fortunate.

I agree, Rob Koll is the man and has always treated me great and anyone else I have known that has crossed paths with him.

From what I could tell, it was more about how the Ivies handled Covid than it was about what Stanford had to offer. In other words, Stanford didn’t exactly pull him away from Cornell.  Has the Ivies not decided to go ahead and cancel the 2021 season, I don’t believe Koll would have left at the time.  I can’t even speculate if he would have left Cornell when UNC opened up.  But to leave Cornell for Stanford…all about the Ivy league covid crap.  He had just lost the Dean family to Penn St and I don’t think he even blamed them as at that point there was no light at the end of the tunnel on when sports would presume for Ivy league teams.  The updated Freidman Center that he was the master of fundraising for and even was heavily involved with the blue prints and such was just finishing up. He was there for its first ever dual but it was on the Stanford side of the bench.  He has the Friedman center and even with Ncaa finalist Max Dean choosing to go to Penn St, and brother Gabe Dean with RTC (which he soon after retired) Rob still had a lineup which included 2 years left of Yianni Diakomihalis who had won as a true freshman and true sophomore and was a pushout with 10 seconds left to JO away from making Olympic team.  He had 3 years left of Vito Arujau.  He had the 4 jersey boys coming in for their freshman year (Foca, Cardenas, Ramirez, Fernandes). Mike Grey was left a couple of trophy teams.  So things were really good in Cornell and no way he was leaving all of that if not for his frustrations with IVY.

I agree with you it’s all crap and not accurate at all.   There was a rumor of Coleman not handling books well at UNC but even that is at best a rumor.  Posting something like that about Koll is irresponsible and has zero trust to it so i’ll take it with much salt.

Yes, I thought it was a re-heated version of the Coleman Scott story distorted by the telephone game and confused because it involved UNC

I created an account after googling “Rob Koll Cornell investigation” and this is the first thing to pop up. I don’t know him personally, I’m just curious. I had heard something from someone who I do trust and is more involved than I will ever be, but at the end of the day, they’re just one person. I googled, saw this thread was recent, and I wanted to see if anyone else had heard anything. To abruptly leave after building up a program for nearly thirty years is odd. He was a pillar of that community, raised his family there, just very invested and settled in NY for all that time…sure, it could be COVID related, but we all knew that, while a pain in the ass, all those protocols were temporary and would pass. Anyways, if no one has heard anything of the like, then I have my answer.

you really are a see through obsessed loser. just stop. you just so happened to google "Rob Koll Cornell investigation" on the day this thread was created? sure. you are a sock created by the person who made this thread. you made this thread just so you could pop in and spread this crap. you seem really bitter and jealous. what a sad little person you are.

lol whatever you say, babes. Koll is facing some backlash from Ferrari, and people are digging. Not just community members, but journalists too. Not to mention his comments last year on “sorority girls”. Not just because he’s creepy, but aloof and not involved in any actual coaching with the boys. He’s rarely at practice. So it was quite the coincidence when I googled it and it popped up, but I think that just goes to show that more people are digging than you probably think. At the end of the day, if you have nothing to hide….you shouldn’t be afraid of what rocks get overturned. Have a nice day 😘

I don’t think it is complicated. Koll spent 30 years at Cornell and built it as far as he could take it. He wasn’t going to catch Penn State, so he wanted a challenge and thought he could help Stanford. Covid probably did reduce his loyalty toward Cornell, they did not let them compete in 2021.
He goes to Stanford and it doesn’t work out. He has a unique opportunity to go to his Alma Mater and he takes it. It seems like he made good decisions. The wrestling community is lucky to have him.

Tell me me about this.  From the outside looking in it seemed things were trending up.  Solid group with good incoming recruits.

he had the #3 recruiting class, the #5, and #12 in concurrent years. he also got a big raise after a year or 2. he was building a great program, but his alma mater came calling so who wouldn't jump?

Is it true he left in search of a real scribe?

Was gonna say this as well.  The only person with any significance I saw with “backlash” against it was Palacio, and Koll was jokingly replying to the post.

He faced more backlash for saying the female students were good looking than for bringing in AJ.

IMO huge mistake to shut down for Covid.   Sort of out the death knell in midlands too.  Now it’s a shell of its former self.  (Yes it was already declining)

What did he go that's creepy and what's this about sorority girls?

Why is Ferrari giving Koll any backlash?
