Before everyone cheers the contracting GDP that's already led to what is technically a 'correction,' and by tomorrow will result in a "crash" in the market(-20% drop)...and argue how that's ACTUALLY a really good thing...maybe just listen to what Reagan said about Tariffs. 

And again, as I said in another thread, Reagan and every President uses SOME form of tariffs. He had regressive tariffs on motorcycles over a 5 year Period as Japan was flooding the market with cheap Motorcycles and Harley was in trouble.

But you don't just put 10-20-40%+ tariffs on Countries. And we want to be the leader in AI...but all we've done is get Japan-CHINA and South Korea to form an alliance, the EU, Canada is going to respond. The rest of the world will.

I don't get how the left says its Ok to pay a more taxes to help everyone, who needs help. But they won't pay a few more cents on a product made here to back the dollar and reduce unemployment and the number of people who need help. Tariffs do increase domestic manufacturing.   more jobs that increases citizenship and tax payers. And over time increases the value of the dollar.

Sure. There was a HUGE boon in Government Jobs and Government Spending over the last three quarters. 

 

This is the type of...just nonsensical arguments. We were dominating the next great Industry. AI, GPUs. We didn't do that with Government spending and it's not gone negative due to lack of Government spending.

I can't believe people think THAT is what tariffs do. 

 

Sure. That's...the extent of tariffs. It just raises things a few pennies. It doesn't create massive unemployment, inflation, a contracting GDP which is of course a contracting tax base. 

It's just a few pennies more on items. 

I have no problem paying a few pennies or percent more. The disastrous policies Trump has enacted...you morons deserve them, you voted for them, you got 'em coming.

i was never in favor of tariffs. I knew that other countries had them on us, but I didn't really care that much.

No. I don't. Neither does the Treasury Sec who when asked if China now has a 54% tariff, he said, "I think." 

When asked how they came up with the tariff rates he replied with he sad, "I don't know."

When asked "what about Mexico and Canada," he said, "I don't know."

 

Doesn't that instill confidence! 3 of our largest trading partners. We just made up a number they "charge" us on tariffs. It wasn't based on reality, but...when is it ever. 

Then when asked exactly what the tariffs would be, he doesn't know. 

 

So what exactly are you asking if I get now? Why we would throw the global economy...which we are at the Center of and just arbitrarily play games with it?

 

It's ALMOST as incompetent as keeping a reporter on a call for a military operation, but....this is worse.

I just read where Heard and Mcdonald Islands are owned by Australia and Trump put a Tariff on them so the islands couldn't be used to avoid the Tariffs.

I just saw the formula Trump used to decide how each country's tariff was decided. 

It his nothing to do with being reciprocal, in spite of the marketing tag line. It charges tariffs based on the size of the trade deficit with the US - not on whether there are any tariffs on us.

It is the most simplistic calculation possible. Call it the artifice of the deal. Take the trade deficit, divide it by how much we import from that country, then divide by 2. That is the percentage tariff on that country. 

Why is that dumb, you may reasonably ask? Because many trade deficits are not caused by tariffs or protectionist policies. Many trade deficits are structural. Another country pays its labor less than we pay ours causing goods from that country to cost less. All we are doing then is importing inflation. So now we make our own t-shirts and sneakers? Who wants those jobs? Perhaps we can bring back some immigrants we just deported to handle the work.

If Trump really wanted this to work, without blowing up our economy, he would have spent time to actually attack the problem - protectionist policies and tariffs. Instead, he is too lazy to do the hard work and will throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Trump relies on the ignorance of his base. He's literally said it. His base sure as hell doesn't understand tariffs. He said the other countries pay them. They believed him. "We're gonna Charge China 50%, 75%, 100% maybe even 200%," and the clowns clap like seals. And people just don't get how bad this could end up. You have the inbred moron I don't even bother reading anymore Jimmy who thinks because it didn't cause a great depression within 24 hours, we're out of the woods. 

 

So yeah, I get how stupid these tariffs are. Everyone has understood it for the last 70 years as the United States has grown and become the most prosperous country in the world.
