One of the things I really like about D3 is that there are tournaments throughout the year at which the entire team wrestles. Starters and backups all getting in the mix.  If guys are going to commit to wrestling in college, it is nice that they give them ample opportunities to mix it up.  I am also surprised by the credentials that some of these kids have.  Multiple time State Champs, placers and qualifiers from all over.  If you think about it, there are very few kids that have find their way to D1.  It is good to know that hundreds of others can continue to do something they really love after high school.

They should let the d2 d3 naia njcaa champs get the options to take an at large for the d1 tourney

The number one seeds at 141, 174 and heavyweight did not make the semis.

Christian Small, the top seeded 141, injury defaulted with a 5-3 lead in the match.

Top seeded 174 Hayden Pummel from Glenville State, loses by second period fall in the round of 16 and unneeded wrestler with a 12-12 record coming i to the tournament.

#1 seeded at heavyweight, crew from Nebraska-Kearney, dropped his opening bout, 8-2.

At 125, unseeded, two-time All-American, Shane Corrigan from Wisconsin-Parkside (seventh in 2023 and sixth in 2024), advances to the semifinals after defeating the seventh and second seeds, also returning All-Americans, to make the semis.

WILD!!!!!

If you want to win the D1 championship, go to a D1 school and enjoy the D1 grind and follow the D1 eligibility standards

Let's talk about Caden Henschel not making it to Nationals this year. He was the top ranked kid at his weight almost all season long, and his coach has said that "[Henschel] is a great kid who does everything right." None of that means he belongs at Nationals this season, but it is a bummer to see his career end this way.

I, for one, have enjoyed watching him compete, and I enjoy some of his content. He is a great for the sport, and it would have been great to see him make a run at a title. That and I am a fan of Nick Becker and what he does at UW-Parkside.

Enjoyed watching him compete.  Enjoyed his content.  Enjoyed watching his improvement over the years.  It is a brutal sport.  It wasn't a good tournament for him.  The difference between winning and losing in D2 or D3, is often very slim, outside of the elite wrestlers.

Does anyone have any comments about the D2 and D3 regional qualifiers last weekend?  The good, the bad, the surprises, things worth noting?

The only thing I saw that is worth mentioning is that D2 #1 at 141 Cayden Hentschel from Wisc-Parkside crashed and burned in Super Region V, and won't be going to nationals.  Parkside guys on the whole underwhelmed.

What happened in D3?  Wartburg have any success?

PS I am obliged to say Wart Sucks.

I wonder if Hentshel put too much time into his youtube channel and not enough into training?

I don’t think so. He was ranked #1 most of the year. Seemed to be a mental lapse both last year and this year.

An interesting story i came across in D3:

Zach Beckner of Ferrum qualified for his 2nd straight and 3rd overall D3 tournament. Not super interesting.

What is?

The 1st one he qualified for was way back in 2017 where he was a National Finalist. From what I can gather, he left school after that until re-enrolling in 2023.

Maybe just as interesting, he wasn't even going to wrestle in 2016 either!

He had committed to Virginia Tech out of HS, but decided he didn't want to wrestle anymore, and enrolled in a community college without wrestling. One contact led to him transferring at semester to wrestle the 2nd half of the season.

Beckner ended up losing in the semis.

Deguire shouldn't be much of a surprise.  Had 6 pins in tourney  and a 3rd place finish two years ago.  Missed last year.  Very entertaining.  Wrestles like a middle school wrestler, but hits everything HARD.

It comes down to the finals for the title. It doesn't get more intense and exciting than this!

J&W - 75.5
Wartburg - 74.5
Augsburg - 74

They each have 2 in the finals.

None of them wrestle each other.

-----

J&W:
#1 Fry at 125 vs. #2 (Fry has won the 2 matches, at nationals in 2023 and 2024, by TF and MD.)
#1 Brown at 149 vs. #2 (no matches)

----

Wartburg:
#1 Endene at 197 vs. #2 (no matches)
NS Williamson at 285 vs. #8 (no matches)

-----

Augsburg:
#3 Willis at 165 vs. #1 (no matches)
#3 Bombard at 184 vs. #5 (split matches this year)

What's the take from D1 fans why they don't pay attention to D2s or D3s? I don't pretend to know.

I love the idea of doing so, i just don't have the time, tbh. Keeping up with D1 to the point that I like to is already a decent time commitment.

There is only one thing that has prevented me from becoming more of a fan: ability to watch more live matches.  There are certainly some streamed (mostly by Flo or in a dual with a lower level D1 team), but it's hard for me to find streams for D2 and D3 teams on a consistent basis.  If you could recommend any, I would be grateful

That is a real issue. Many of the conferences around the country are trying to monetize those streams, which is fracturing the ability to see D2 and D3 Duals regularly. They do, however, post that content for free shortly after the event is over.

That being said, I do know that Flo is working to try and get teams/conferences to utilize their platforms for duals. I don't think it has really grabbed hold just yet. The NSIC or GLVC would be the logical places to start in D2.

They should invite the D2 and D3 champs to participate in D1 championships a week later.  Give them the 32 and 33 seed if you don't know where to put them.  It would add excitement to the tournament.

I'd love that.

Former Hawkeye Joel Jesuroga is battling in the finals for St. Cloud State against defending champion and 2X AA Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma.  Jesuroga beat Johnson in January when the teams faced in a dual.  0-0 going into the 2nd
