Watched him in the Under 23 world tournament.

A lot of good moves but not that great at setups.

He needs to spend time with a master. John Smith is the guy. He can get him prepped and thinking 3-7 moves ahead and really tweak his mat awareness for openings he is missing now.

He is very good, no doubt about it. But to be a world beater he needs to vary his attack and polish the moves so they are seamless.

Perhaps before John Smith retired that may have helped.

Is Messenbrink an odd-on favorite now for the 2025 WC spot at 74? Him or Carr, but Messenbrink more upside internationally, if he fix his defense.

Still a significant downgrade for a 74 kg US rep since maybe 15 years. I don't think Messenbrink, or Carr, or anyone else in the picture is anywhere near medal threats for senior level, unfortunately.

In November 2010 most people didn't see JB as a medal threat. Lots of potential in the US stable.

Who was in front of JB that's comparable to who's in front of MM?

I have to point out that this just isn't true.

Certainly few thought he'd beat tsargush but thats not the same as saying he's not a medal threat.

Anyone and everyone, I've never seen the kid wrestle.  I'd put my money on Mesenbrink.  🙂

Messenbrink most overrated wrestler of all time.

Spot on op. Guy is a chicken with head cut off. Good motor but physically manhandled against the big boys.

Never seen it with him.

Carr is a different class. And that class is several classes below what we've had. Gonna be a big hole on the roster.

I did not say "in Spring of 2011" - November of 2010 was before JB's senior year and his 1st at 165.  He had missed the previous year due to injury.  Most importantly JB did not have a lot of FS experience.  He jumped into in the spring of 2011 and looked good immediately.

I 100% believe that David Carr is world medal material..
