DT's post-finals interview did a lot to address any concerns.  He talked to the team before making the decision, talked to administrators, then made the decision.  The school's support is pretty obvious, including the AD's statement.  Afterwards, DT said he hadn't decided yet if he was going to actually compete at Worlds, recognizing his job takes precedence and that he'd discuss it further with the team, and any real concerns about it interfering would carry the day.  He also was pretty honest that a lot of this was about not wanting to end his career on a down note, and he's now addressed that.

Maybe his words are partly self-serving BS as he really wants to go and is just watching his step, but even so, he's at least saying and considering the right things.  If I had to guess I'd say he goes either way, as I think the AD is right about the branding benefit for OSU, and the team will benefit from seeing close-up what it means to prepare for but at least he's saying the right things.  And worlds are over before the season starts.

Why does he have to discuss further with the team and those who supported him to begin with. Did they not believe he could win the spot?. "Man DT, I didn't think you were going to win, so I guess we need to discuss this further." Is anyone really going to raise their hand and say no?

My assumption is he only asked for their buy-in through trials, and said he would re-evaluate if and when he won.  And that does make sense, especially given that his comments suggest that winning trials may enough of a high note for DT to retire on.  We shall see.

That said, you're surely right that no current wrestler is going to be the one to tell him "no Coach you should stop competing and spend all your time with us." That's going to need to come from admin, his assistants, donors and himself.  (Not that I think he shouldn't go, only that it sure won't be his wrestlers holding him back.)

Yeah...those are good points and I get wanting to end on a high note...but something about "I can win trials and end on a high note, then not go to worlds because I might lose" doesn't seem DT-esque. Just kind of a weird situation, but at least he addressed it right away to avoid the Gable backlash.

Using his COVID year. Don't know why more teams don't think of this.

LOL yeah that's a good way to put it.  DT's never been accused of excessive unselfishness.  But that's true of a lot of high-achieving competitors, and I'll give DT the benefit of a doubt as in his interview he did say all things an OSU supporter would hope he says.  Besides... $7 mil, right?  Can't imagine even an uber-selfish DT would want to crash that gravy train before it ever even gets chugging along.

There was zero suggestion or discussion of him not going to worlds because he couldn't win.

The discussion is about the different impact on his coaching from going to trials for a weekend vs leaving the country for a week plus to compete at worlds right before the season.

I think it's great for OSU wrestling to have him go, but I get why it's two different discussions.

I agree, there was not, but it speaks to the point of going out on a high note....and you also forgot my mention that it does not seem DTesque.

There is 0% chance he crashes it because he wrestles at Worlds. Fire DT before he even gets started... not happening.

Not disagreeing, but my point is the moment he gets some administrative or donor pushback on continuing to compete, he's going to call it quits.  Not going to risk killing the golden goose.

A few here jumped down my throat when I said there was validity in this thing being a distraction. You sound far more logical with your take than they did. Its obvious to anyone not wearing david taylor colored glasses that training for and competing in the worlds will distract the focus on the college team. Hard to quantify it, but it certainly is more than 0.

So you made it up and then judged it not accurate.  Awesome that you can be the source and the dismissal in the same post.  Let me try.

I think it's bad that Daton Fix eats puppies and I also think it's not Datonesque.

When people (and Taylor supposedly)  say he wants to go out on a high note by winning Trials, but then doesn't want to go to Worlds, it begs the question of how confident they/he are in winning worlds if the original goal is to "go out on a high note." . Sorry. you don't see the logic there. You can continue to yell at people to get off your lawn now.

I still go back to why this discussion was not had originally when everyone knew he was the odds on favorite to win the spot and qualify for Worlds. Sucks to be Trent Hidlay finding this out when he could have gotten a shot at ZV.

Same reason I said before:  because it was not necessary to have the conversation if DT hadn't decided whether he wanted to take it any further than just competing in WTTs.

Would Hidlay not have a shot at Zahid if DT opts out?  Seems like he ought to.  Makes no sense for a guy to go 0-2 in his only WTT matches and win the spot.

DT certainly didn't say he wants to go out on a high note and he might not go to worlds because of that.  DT's comments said he didn't want to end on the down note of losing at the OTT.  BAC said winning trials might be enough of a high note to end things on.  You took that and created that he somehow doesn't want to lose at Worlds.  Then you commented on how the thing you created doesn't seem like DT.

Did you ever consider that there are quotes around that statement and why they are being used? Did you consider that I am questioning  BAC's theory that he wants to go out on top so he is going to stop at the WTT? Did you consider that you are misinterpreting and trying to say I made up a theory, attributed it to Taylor, when perhaps you are reading it wrong?

"I get wanting to end on a high note (means I understand what BAC is getting at for someone wanting to end their career on a high note after OTT)...but something about "I can win trials and end on a high note, then not go to worlds because I might lose" (notice right here that it's in quotes and I am questioning that logic not quoting DT)  doesn't seem DT-esque" Notice how I end with that not being Taylor and not attributing what is in quotes to him.  As an additional note, the phrase "but something about" is being used to create doubt about what is coming next - what is in the quotes.

Okay.  You didn't say any of the stuff you said if it's important to you.  Either way I made it far more important than I should have and replied far too many times already.  Sorry for being difficult and I'll let it drop here.
