I don’t personally believe that, but you gotta admit the number of elite athletes/coaches saying this indicates that their belief is helping them.

Also gotta give credit to Cael that he’s not outspoken about it, as I do think there could be some legal gray areas if a coach is pushing religion while being employed by a state school (and yes I know PSU is a “public-private partnership” or whatever).  I would bet Cael is not actually pushing anything.

Dawn Staley on the other hand, I’m not so sure.  I know this is a hit piece but it  raises some relevant points - https://www.thedailybeast.com/south-carolina-womens-basketball-coach-dawn-staley-might-be-violating-her-players-religious-freedom

If believing Mythical Characters helps, we'll pray to Paul Bunyan...

So do you go with the he helps them lose theory or just neutral?

I wonder what kind of meltdown people would have if someone declared that Muhammad helped them win. I see the "100% Jesus trained" shirts. Imagine if someone had a "100% Prophet Muhammad trained" shirt. 😂

Neutral

I can agree with the neutral, I think what most are saying is that He helps them wrestle their best, hence look at KOT v Carr.

I said in the post that “their belief”seems to help them (but apparently not with staying healthy before Olympic Trials).   But I meant I think it’s their belief doing that, not Jesus himself.

When I said "what most are saying" I meant most like O'Toole, Carr etc. are saying after the match not what you were saying.  I think they are saying Jesus helps them just like He helps many in their daily life.  What I see is it is more than just their "belief" helping them.  But that's my opinion/belief yours may differ.

Yeah that’s what I said.  They believe he’s helping them. I believe it’s just their belief helping them, not actually Jesus

The wrestling community is extremely conservative.   That is incontestable.

Like the military, it tends to prioritize loyalty over truth, emotional responses over reason, religious belief over scientific evidence, faith over fact, hierarchy over equality, conformity over iconoclasm, and the like.

Accept it or not, that may help athletes to cope with trials and tears, or to comfort themselves in loss.  And even to give themselves a blind kind of edge at times in competition.   That is all compatible with what we know about evolution and psychology.

But it makes for bad journalism, poor science, and terrible art, which are each and all about a serious encounter with reality, the raw and primal stuff of existence that thankfully pushes back against illusions and delusions.

Or to be at once more mundane and musical: "Just 'cause you feel it [God, Jesus, Allah, Yahweh] , doesn't mean it's there" (Radiohead)

Muhammad is really popular in the UFC (Khabib, Usman, Adesanya, Khamzat, Macachev etc).  He made an appearance in the NBA (70's/80's Kareem).  He did just fine.  Don't know how he'll be welcomed in the college wrestling scene

Considering that all of the Iranians and most of the Russians are muslim and outward with their faith, I think this is a moot point.

Agree, except for maybe Aaron Brooks.  For that reason I’m rooting for him to beat Yazdani in the Olympic finals just to hear his post-match interview.

Well Aaron has stated his underhook is from God himself and Yazdani got his from his club coach

Perhaps this is a dumb question but is Jesus = God? I feel like I’ve heard some people make that equivalence but I thought he was supposed to be God’s son?

Depends on which Christian Theology you follow.  But, I do remember the idea of the trinity was borrowed from Plato as early christianity spread through Greece.  I'm sure our fellow philosopher @SocraTeasecan chime in.  I've hears a lot of debate that the story of Jesus is more akin to Greek mythology than Jewish tradition
