Who Does UB Get?

Recommended Posts

This is not a thread about whether or not Stutzman did a good job or not/if he should have been let go or not. This is strictly about who they will get to replace him. I feel like I have a good amount of college wrestling knowledge, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a list of qualified candidates who would be interested.

Might be a bit much for such young guys to take on. But I don't hate that list.

Matt Lackey was there for a spell, right? He's down at Lock Haven. Could be a candidate.

Russ Hughes out of Bloomsburg.

Scott Green from Army.

Wynn Michalak of Campbell. Could be in the running for CMU as well.

Bolyard from UM(CMU also)

I like this list a lot. All have MAC ties aside from Scott Green, who has NY ties. I like that.

After the troubles at UNC with his wrestler intentionally hurting others and him keeping that wrestler on the team, you may not have to throw a bag of money at him.

This was my immediate reaction as well.  1) You may not have to throw a bag of money at him, and 2) are you sure you want to?

Surprised no Dake mentions yet.  I don’t think it’s realistic (or smart) but it’s much more realistic than suggestions that teams like Iowa or Wisconsin should hire him.

Totally hear what you're saying, but not sure I'd judge a coach solely on his worst wrestler ever.  Seems to me he still has quite a few redeeming qualities.  But yes, maybe it wouldn't take as much money as I'd thought.

Yeah, and initially I was going to say "hmm, I don't get why he's staying out there, he could have so many programs if he was interested..."

But then I remembered what one of my brother's best friends said after moving out to Ft. Collins, which is just next to Greeley, CO.  And I quote, "I miss you guys, I'd love to have you come visit, but it's awesome out here, I'm never leaving."

So if Colorado State needs a wrestling coach, Troy would be their guy?

Maybe, I'm just spitballing, just sharing that I've heard there are certain intangibles about life in that corner of the country that would make a relocation to Buffalo a potentially hit or miss proposition.

To me, it actually makes more sense for a bigger school to take a gamble with a guy like Dake than it would for a small school. Being an “all-time great” wrestler, does not mean you will be a good coach, but if he can coach, it’s a huge recruiting advantage. Guys like Gable, Cael, Smith all became all-time great head coaches with only like 3 years of assistant coaching experience. Maybe it’s worth it for a top program to risk that 3 year learning curve to potentially have an all time great? Maybe not? But for a school like Buffalo, even if the best case happens and Dake turns out to be a phenomenal coach, he’s gone for bigger school within 3 years. So for them, the risk would seem to have little payout

Where will  Stutzman End up at, maybe Kent if they make a change?

Seems weird that any DI school would take a coach with limited success at a lower level DI school

There are so few DI jobs ands so many young Asst. Coaches out there.

The issue is many of the guys who are long term assistant or Associate Head Coach’s (Casey Cunningham, Jared Frayer, Donny Pritzlaff, Luke Becker, Terry Brands, Jeremy Hunter, J Jaggers, Bryan Snyder) who are actually the highest qualified would have to deal with these things.

1. They 100% will not have the resources they are used to at a fully funded school.

2. They will likely have to deal a lot less with running practices and deal with alumni relations, organization of different stuff. Not that as a assistant you don’t have that but at a small school you have less scholarship, less money, less staff from coaches to trainers.

3. Many have kids and wives, if not all of them. Half of my list coach at the college they wrestled so they likely have a wife from that same area who doesn’t want to move the family.

4. Let’s be honest, the guys on this list would be taking pay cuts to become a head coach at a non fully funded program.
