I wasn't an athlete, turned 17 in January of my senior year in high school.  From what I can tell, someone in my situation can take two greyshirt years and still get 5 for 5.

What percentage of DI wrestlers were held back?

This started with James. He's not a regular DI wrestler. I never mentioned nor did I allude to anyone other than the elite DI true freshman. This seems obtuse just  to be obtuse?

All three Lee brothers skipped their senior year of HS and were at the NLWC for a year before enrolling.  Worked out well for Nick, but not so much Joe and Matt.

James isn't "so young". How old were you when you entered your senior year of high school? If you were 17, as most are, you could take a gap year.

I turned 18 in May of my senior year of high school, and there was nothing special about me. I was the same age as all my peers.

Hold backs and “Texas redshirts” as we used to call them aside…

School years run late Aug/early Sept to late May/late June of the following year. That’s 9-10 months. If your birthday falls in the May-July window of the academic year, you’re on the younger side and likely many of your classmates have turned 18 already.

Way back in 19-dickety-two when I was a Sr, I also turned 18 in May, about 6wks before graduation, I was one of the younger kids in my grade, of my friend group I was the 2nd youngest/2nd to last to turn 18.

So yes James is on the young side. And given some of these kids who are indeed held back for academic or athletic reasons who may be 12-18mos older than their peers, yes he is young.

No, the point is that most high school student athletes can take a gap year, elite D1 true freshmen or otherwise. If that is obtuse you, so be it.

Happy Belated 20th, Bo!

Is there any DEFINITIVE ruling as to whether he gets 5 years or not?

I'll look back on the VT board, but pretty sure Coach Frayer confirmed 5 years was settled for him

Yes, I know he came he said this- after Flo said he wasn't, and then I think I heard the next day that it was still a grey area.  Hopefully, for the fans, we get to see 5 years.
