In the full tilt podcast Kolat talked about a guy who had an impossible leg and would lead it really hard, so he had to shoot to it, only so he could just drop it and grab the other one which was now available. Most probably remember RBY posting his hand on his hip so Desanto couldn't get a tie up on that side (i guess the rationale was that he wasn't near fast enough to shoot on him without a tie up, and would be feeding into his best position if he did)

I started imagining if wrestlers from other countries had weird plans for wrestlers who seem normal to us, or in any case what are the weirdest gameplans you're aware of, especially ones that correspond with weird styles, I'd really like to know how people handle Seth Gross cause he's one of the more unorthodox i can think of.

The main thing I would ensure against Gross is not giving him an easy Russian tie.  Secondly, I would attack much more conservatively, because of his length, reattack and scrambling ability.

I would probably prioritize moves with clean finishes, and minimize scrambling time all together

Seems like Gross has lost to all kinds of styles? Agreed he's unorthodox. Perhaps the nuance is lost on me...

he might be a poor example, he's just super weird, but he might just get beat cause his moves aren't mechanically sound.

Better example, game plans for Logan Stieber.

Stieber would be really hard.  No apparent weaknesses.
Whoever you are, you should be practicing against a lefty for a good month before that match to get used to that if you are not already.  I hate to say this, because it goes against my own personal wrestling philosophy, but against Stieber, you probably want focus on holding center, and conserving energy and wasting time.  I think that is a cowardly philosophy, but if you only cared about winning, then sure.  I never did that and I also didn't win as much as others.

Don't overengage or overreact.  if he gets a takedown, don't start wrestling with more urgency all the sudden.  Play the long game.  Frustrate him with short ties, and preventing him from controlling the hand fight too much.  Not a great game plan, but its a tough opponent.

Yeah in keeping with your take, you could try to re-shoot him, but its almost a risk because it start the 17-15 shoot out which is basically his match, at least in Free.

Oh god. He's gonna be one of the least popular NCAA wrestlers this season.

TCNJ used to put on a summer wrestling camp in the late 90's/early 2000's run by Dave Icenhower.

I wrestled a dwarf in one of those tournaments who was very good, and I just didn't know how to approach him.  I ended up losing pretty convincingly but never faced him again.  I would have liked some guidance on how to approach that situation.

Matthew Botello going with par terre defense on bottom in a folkstyle match against Seidel was an interesting one

I got a good one based on that post. Watch Schultz freetsyle bottom strategy against Pat Smith. This is one of my favorite matches cause its so tacitcally weird.

Dake not throwing a boot in ever on DT despite that being a huge part of his top game because he knew David was so good at catching legs and turning in comes to mind. He would just claw ride on his toes and pinch his knees.

Pat Smith wrestled "with a lot of emotion." He always looked pissed, either at his opponent, the ref, or himself. I notice it more now bc of the currently popular shanti, shanti approach.

the inverse was also true. Neither could leg the other.

You ever try to arm bar a dwarf?

you can't just use the point finger but pointer plus middle fits pretty good.

Never wrestled a dwarf (unless you consider all wrestlers dwarfs), never even met a dwarf, seen some on tv, GOT etc.

Remember the argument that Anthony Robles having one leg was an unfair advantage?

I know a guy who wrestled him at nationals, he'll swear its BS to this day. "ITS LIKE HAVING A F'N 84LBER ON TOP OF YOU!"
