Mayor of NYC promised free food, free busses, lower rents.

He has raised taxes on the richest, and lets assume the richest leave.

Where will he get the money to provide free food, free busses, and lower rents?

Maggie Thatcher famously said, "socialism works until they run out of other people's money".   Or words to that effect.   This is true.   Socialism as espoused by the NYC mayor is a charade, it depends on fleecing the rich folks and if they leave, then the rest of the city has to be fleeced to provide for the free services which are no longer free really.

It can't work.

When did he ever promise free food? He has delivered already in a lot of his campaign promises, he accomplished the rent freeze, is working with state legislature for busses, and got parts of his child care plans already through. There hasn’t been a max exodus from nyc that people like you are hoping for. In terms of just a politician delivering on his platform, he has accomplished many more of his goals than many other politicians in power right now.

His grocery stores.   They will cost $30 million to start up (a private group can do it for 7 million or so) and supposedly will be a non profit.   I'm sure it will be a non profit, it won't even pay for itself.   5 of these throughout the city.   This has been tried in Kansas City and was a complete failure.   Oh, they didn't do it right is that correct?   Will the workers work for free?

Rent freeze.   So who is going to keep up the buildings as property taxes and insurance increase.  That increases the amount the owner has to pay each month.   With zero increase in revenue, where does that money come from?   It is unsustainable.   Oh but the city will take over the properties.   And show me where that has worked out well for anyone.

Free busses - The bus system already complains they are short of money.   With no fares, it will turn into what Seattle has with the free fentanyl busses.   They will become uninhabitable cesspools.   No one will ride them if that happens.   You won't be able to keep anyone off the busses because they are free for everyone.   At least the fare keeps people without money off the busses.  will the workers work for free?  Oh the maintenance costs, adminstrative costs.   All drains on the budget with no revenue.

Child Care - Are the workers working for free?  Nope.   Child care is very expensive, and no doubt these free services will not be very locally available, you'll have to travel out of the way to get to them.   They are not free then, they take time and energy away from you.

And the answer you avoided - who will pay if the rich leave town?   That is a hypothetical that the plan must absorb.   Wishful thinking is not a plan.   If the money leaves that is supposed to pay for all of this, where does the money come from?

1. The grocery stores will not be giving out free food people will still have to pay it will just be subsidized à la military commissaries.

2. Oh no the landlords won’t get there desired rent increases how will they ever survive? You’ll find most nyc landlords don’t even spend money on maintenance and up keeping that’s kind of driving people wanting a rent freeze.

3. That’s pretty much all speculation based on another states lack of policing which nyc doesn’t really compare to.

4. They found room in the budget so who really cares? Would you prefer a family have to spend $2,000 a month on child care instead of traveling a few miles for affordable child care?

5. Again all speculation for a hypothetical. I’m sure if somehow everyone left and they couldn’t find it, they would cut the programs as the electorate of nyc would revolt on reneged campaign promises

I literally answered in my post my guy. I believe that they would probably rather cut these programs than strap the working nyc class more as it would be political suicide and cause a lot of strife

Healthcare

Can you be more specific.  My mother was a secretary at a doctors office and worked in “healthcare”.   My cousin is a surgeon and he works in “healthcare”

So you have a point of how socialism will now suddenly work when it hasn’t yet in the history of the world?

Currently working or not I think the over arching point would be that they have provided a service to their country AND signed a contract that agrees to possibly lose that life in defense of their country etc etc. I think a discount on food isn’t too unreasonable…

The point is you can’t make socialism work without people paying for those that do nothing. And you’ll eventually run out of money because of that. Pretty simple.

Agree with all of that but they’re actually producing something to get something.  That doesn’t happen in socialism.

You’re giving me an article about millionaires in nyc in 2022. Seems like mamdani didn’t create an exodus of the rich lmao

The point is it was already happening and it’s getting worse.
