Advertising to Americans is what funds sports. Americans like champions.  Small investment makes lots of wrestling champions.

I hate midterm season … so many folkstyle wrestling D1 champion ads on the TV and not enough freestyle ones.    And zero Greco ones.

Change it to freestyle, the same people would watch.

Ahh ... yeah maybe ... except we would've lost have the fans during the ball grab era.  As soon as the annoucer said "they are going to the ball grab again" half the fans would've got up and left for various reasons.  :classic_ohmy:

No anger here.. just at a loss as to why any wrestling fan wouldn’t want more wrestling.

that spurred an iowa recruitment that i was ok with purely because of money and he was there for about 5 months and just doesn't like folk enough to do what he needed to do to be a D1 athlete... and the simple fact of the matter was he just could not accept that nobody in that room was trying to be a world champ...

Uh…Spencer Lee was in that room, correct?

Pretty easy equation.    Folkstyle is 80% more entertaining and watchable than freestyle.

bowling and disk golf are as entertaining and watchable as Greco

it is also never on.   Or on at 4am….  Or not having huge prime time duals on Friday night or on espn.   Or a whole weekend of wrestling on big time streaming services, ESPN, etc…..

because freestyle is not a fan friendly entertaining sport.   It’s just the reality.    It does not make it bad.  I am sure most of us competed in it at one point.

I think I realized why the topic of our “top” wrestlers not usually going Greco has made you so mad recently.

Is it because your world team member son unfortunately lost to a guy who was a slightly above average D1 wrestler?

they started wrestling greco when we were still in Oklahoma, but, calling what OK does greco is a stretch but we started talking gold medals then...

the club we moved into in CO were very pro international styles and they got about the best youth greco coaching available in this country... provisor was in the room quite a bit... lindland would come in as well on occasion...

they oldest started going to the OTC after winning nationals in free the summer before his freshmen year of high school...

personally, i had no desire for them to even wrestle in high school... didn't seem important enough to me... but, their coach got a job as an assistant at a high school and max followed him there... bunch of shenanigans ensued... was suspended from repping CO for a year... kicked out of the OTC... blah blah blah... it could have gone very bad but he pulled it together and chose greco and NMU over UNI...

the younger hated folk... absolutely hated it... but there is just not any real opportunities to do greco full time young in this country... wrestled his freshmen year at a different high school... got into the state finals and got a little roughed up on size... then took 5th at cadet worlds the next summer and that was it for him... we just started to figure out how to get him training where ever we could... his coach was supportive because he knew how much he hated folk... was wrestling college kids as a 115lb 16 year old... blew his knee out as a result... got cleared to go back to training 3 weeks before state and his HS coach/teammates convinced him to come back and wrestle so he shed about 20lbs and ended up 4th totally out of shape... then back to full time greco...

he then met joe warren and we moved again so he could train full time with a senior athlete... OTC tried to recruit him as a resident athlete but he turned them down to do his own thing which was better than anything they could provide at the time...that did not go over well at all and started a bit of a war with USAW that still has some ripples today...

he did wrestle his senior year at the local HS that his buddy had been wrestling for... he complimented their team very well and between the two and couple of others they set a tone and won the team title that year... it was pretty fun... the team had never been good before and went right back to not being good right after... that spurred an iowa recruitment that i was ok with purely because of money and he was there for about 5 months and just doesn't like folk enough to do what he needed to do to be a D1 athlete... and the simple fact of the matter was he just could not accept that nobody in that room was trying to be a world champ...

college wrestling was never pushed in our house... world and olympic medals was pushed...

D1 was a fall back plan and they both had multiple offers, but, chose greco because that is what they wanted to do...

you can not be a world champ in folk... it is just that simple...

and doing things just because everyone else think you should do them is a sheep's mentality and that is just not how any of us roll...

greco guys in this country across the board are a different breed from the sheeple and those are our people...

You'll take issue with this comment, but I think we need to find a way to get Greco occurring in college rooms somehow. As I said, it doesn't translate too well to folkstyle skills, but where else are young men going to build up these skills? There's one college and the OTC. Similar in how the top 3 at NCAAs get spot at WTTs, we need to do the same for Greco. Make it top 8. Not everyone will go, but it's a start. I know, I know... They're going to get their ass beat by these super tough different breed of human Greco guys, and will mostly be a bloodbath for those that try, but the culture surrounding Greco is so bad in this country. If we can get some guys who are our most talented folkstylers to focus on Greco over the summer, I think it will have positive benefits.

The Greco pipeline is so broken. What did we used to do 20+ years ago? Was the OTC just bigger and then the RTCs showed up and Greco was not part of their planDid  most of the guys who got medals back then also wrestle college seasons? They don't do that anymore.

They need RAF to support it with a match with some high level guys. maybe adjust scoring to pay for throws or turns. Maybe split a period where each guy gets top parterre. See what the reaction is.

i understand you have absolutely no context what actually happens for a high level athlete, but, no... he was not in the room at the time...

it is absolutely adorable you think i am "mad"... if this place made me "mad" i simply would not be here... why would anyone do anything purposedly that makes them "mad"?

i don't get mad squabbling with anonymous forum nerds hiding behind screen names on the internet and i do not get "mad" at wins and losses in wrestling...

so painfully AVERAGE...

tOSU is running fairly consistent greco practices if yevhen's insta is anything to go by...

iowa gave it an experiment and still has a multiple time age level world team member there that does train off season and has brought in a friend from europe to train this past summer...

oregon state has/had a greco presence when engel was still there and attao was still attending... joel adams is now there and on the senior team this year... both attao and engel have moved to the OTC...

and yes, 20 years ago the OTC was the spot to go before RTCs started becoming a thing... that place was hopping then and everyone trained together at the time...

with joe warren as the national team coach and borerro on staff at the OTC, it is becoming a much bigger thing in the last 6 months...

Over a 5 month period he was never in the room?

Yeah I'd support RAF doing occasional matches with different styles/rulesets as opposed to gimmicky shit like tag-team matches that some wrestlers were trying to make happen when the company first launched last year

my understanding was very rarely, but, i was not asking for daily reports, dummy...

i can only recall lee coming up one time in a convo..."he's not around" was the reply...

i am sure an anonymous forum nerd will concoct all sorts of ideas of what that means...

You have on more than one occasion relayed information in the first-person about Iowa as if you were in the room

You should probably stop doing that

no...

another anonynmous forum nerd hiding behind a screen name is constantly just making up shit to fit a narrative that feels comfortable to them and they have no clue about anything...

i just once would like a legitimate answer to the question, but, so far it has been ignored every time because the only answer is just a troll hiding behind a screen name desperately trying to be an asshole because his tiny little feelings got bruised...

Maybe the competition in question wasn’t good enough to push Spencer so he found better practice partners.    The kid in question here was never going to crack the starting lineup at Iowa so why would one expect Lee to train with someone like that ?

you have no idea how good "the kid in question" is or was, but, you will make assumptions because another bruised ego hiding behind a screen name...

lee was just coming off paris and a major disappointment... he did not compete again until the next january...

was in the gym at training?

i have no doubt he was...

was he in the gym training with the college guys?

no...

the last two months otto was there he barely trained with any of the college guys...

why you anonymous forum nerds get so twisted up about everything will never not be a source of amusement for me...

When you’re not good enough at folkstyle or freestyle to be in that room… same comment why would they want to tech a guy 50 times in a row.   That doesn’t help them.

sounds like this kid specialized in bowling errr I mean a different sport called Greco.  He Had nothing to offer anyone in the room training wise and took his ball and went home.

When you make your own bed you have to sleep in it.

he was more than welcome to stay at train there, dummy...

he was there for 2 months after it was decided he wasn't going to do folk anymore...

why do you continue to just make up stuff that you have no clue about at all?

that is a serious question...

you are just trying to be an asshole because your feelings got hurt...

but...

you anonymous forum nerds are going to have to come to a realization at some point that you just do not matter and have absolutely no affect on anything in the real world...
