There will be some articles about this soon but what are some fan favorite roster battles for their favorite teams or just in general for this upcoming season, especially with 5 for 5 and everyone looking to start.

My favorite underrated on is probably at Pitt where (assuming Evans moves up) there are two spots at 149/157 for Kal Miller, Eugene Harney, Vince Bouzakis and Finn Solomon to battle for. These are all guys who I think can win matches at NCAAs at either weight and I am so curious to see how light/heavy they come back and what weights they shoot for.

There are many others so everyone chime in with their ones to watch

From what I’m hearing Karson Brown is killing it at practices for Ohio State. If he takes the 141 spot then Bouzakis is certainly the odd man out. It’s going to be a battle to watch.

Also, 197 for Ohio State is going to be great. Shumate, Rogotzke and possibly Fishback (184 cut is brutal for him) but all possible low end AA types.

Good…how about the brother at 149?  Will he beat out Shaw?

It’s going to be a tight battle as well but I from what I’ve seen most people are predicting Brown take the spot at 149. I have been underwhelmed by Shaw’s performances so far but that’s ok, he was a freshman.

Has there ever been a scenario that could be playing out in Happy Valley, with 2 high level wrestlers (both AA candidates) battling it out for the starting spot at HWT, and they happen to be twin brothers?

If Karson gets the 141 spot I see Nic trying to cut back down to 125, wrestling the bare minimum there in order to qualify for Nationals.

I think Shumate takes 197 this year, Rogotzke might be better off trying to challenge Fishback if he can make it back down. He might the the utility fill-in between 197 and HVY as well. Don't see Feldman being utilized a full season.

Im not surprised. Kid is a monster and I think an AA contender out of the gate. Wish he was still a Panther but oh well

Bouzakis spoke after the season and said that drop nearly killed him and he’ll never wrestle folkstyle there again. He’ll certainly have a decision to make.

Rogotzke has been rumored to be walking around a healthy 200+….I'm not sure he’s dropping to 184. I like Rogotzke at 197 over Shumate…I tend to be in the minority there it seems but he’s got that unpredictability Shumate doesn’t and I think that’s the difference. We’ll see. Fishback will be Fishback…184 and cut/wrestle his style.

The 157 - 165 - 174 weights at PSU will be really interesting to see how it plays out.  If MM does stay at 165, who will be the starter at 157 between PJ Duke, Tyler Kasak, and even Joe Sealey?  If one of them moves up 1 or 2 weight classes, then someone will also be out between Jayden James and Will Henckel.

Crazy to think that some of those guys will not be in a starting lineup.

I expect without study that this will tend to reduce the depth of some of the stronger well-funded programs where blue chip recruit expectations were managed by redshirts, gray shirts, and other planned eligibility deferrals.

On the Ivies and 5 for 5, I wonder if the league will adjust league rules to adopt.  Right now no graduate students can compete.  Might be individual school rules that are incongruent with 5 for 5 as well.  Some Ivy programs have used greyshirt deferrals before enrollment and that may now disappear?

More broadly I would expect more immediate line-up challenges and roster conflicts that had been avoided with eligibility deferals.

As a side note the oversight committee passed a change to no longer have a match minimum for final ranking  This helps make sure that the NCAA is more accurately seeded. This could influence guys like Bouzakis to wrestle a limited schedule down a weight.

Cornell has incoming Elijah Cortez facing off against Ivy champion Ferrera at 133, (I don't think Isaiah Cortez will have a problem at 125 with Milani), at 184 returning starter Cerchio against incoming Big Little D (Elijah Diakomihalis), at 197 incoming Jude Correa against returning from injury starter Mikey Dellagatta, and at 285 returning starter Ashton Davis against incoming Other Big D Rocco Dellagatta.

I don't see Stewart going 174, and 184 is also probably a stretch. Two reasons, one being he went 190 this past week at national duals, two he is going to be playing RB for the Illini football team so I would imagine they want him gaining weight.

I like Correa to take over and have a very nice career, but for what it's worth Dellagatta is listed as 184 for next season currently by Cornell.

He's wrestled at 190 but has never weighted that. Not sure he can put on any more weight on a 5'6 frame.

Roster Battles that will shape the season heading into 2026

College wrestling is an unforgivable sport, with many elite wrestlers ending up on the bench. But, this gives us some awesome roster battles throughout the year. Here are some of the best roster battles heading into the 2026-27 seasons.

First off, let’s address the Penn State roster battles:

Penn State: 157,165,174

Tyler Kasak, PJ Duke, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Will Henckel Jayden James?

Four spots, for four world class wrestlers? The numbers don’t add up, but with the new 5 for 5 rules coming into affect next year, it would allow Jayden James to sit out a year, and still have five years of eligibility left heading into 2027. But how does 165/174 shake out? Does one of PJ Duke/Mitchell Mesenbrink jump up to 174? It’s a more open and shut case for Mesenbrink to win their, but with Olympic aspirations at 74KG, and PJ Duke growing by the day, it may be a curveball to have PJ Duke make the same jump from 157-174 that Levi Haines did a couple years ago. And then Will Henckel, where does he fit in? Do they just put him at 74? He’s the most naturally sized, and a certified AA contender, but  would they really use him and burn a year of eligibility for PJ Duke for Henckel?

  • Prediction:
    • 157- Tyler Kasak
    • 165- Mitch Mesenbrink
    • 174- PJ Duke

Penn State 141: Nathan Desmond vs Braeden Davis vs Masa Ono

Oklahoma State 165/174: Ladarian Lockett vs Casey Swiderski vs Alex Facundo vs Lorenzo Norman

  • Two spots for four AA threats.
    • Ladarian Lockett (SO) (165)
    • Lockett is coming off an incredible true freshman season where he amassed an 18-4 record, beating guys like Ryder Downey and national finalist Michael Caliendo. He came into the national tournament as the 5 seed before falling in the R16.
  • Casey Swiderski (SR) (165)
    • Swiderski spent last season at 149 where he captured he got on the stand for the second time in his career, finishing 8th. Swiderski wrestled at 74KG at U23’s last month, and it looks like he’ll throw his hat in the ring here with the incoming bump up of true freshman national champ Sergio Vega.
  • Alex Facundo (SR) (165/174)
    • Facundo is a 2x national qualifier (R12, R16). This past year, Facundo finished R16 after coming into NCAA’s with as the 8 seed with an 18-8 record. He was a bit undersized for 174 last year, so he may try his hand at 165 this year, but it seems like at either weight, he is the odd man out.
  • Lorenzo Norman (SO) (174)
    • David Taylor landed a huge transfer out of Stanford this offseason with Lorenzo Norman. Norman has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but the upside is immense. He beat national champ Shane Griffith at CKLV his true freshman season, and had a two takedown lead on Keegan O’Toole at one point in the QF of NCAA’s in 2025. This should be Norman’s spot, but he’ll have a tough test with Alex Facundo.
  • Prediction:
    • 165- Ladarian Lockett
    • 174- Lorenzo Norman

Pittsburgh 157: Kal Miller vs Dylan Evans vs Vince Bouzakis vs Finn Solomon

  • Kal Miller (SR)
    • 61-46 career record
    • 3yr starter
    • 3x NQ (141/149 Maryland)
  • Dylan Evans (JR)
    • 60-29 career record
    • 2yr starter
    • 2x NQ (1x R16)
  • Vince Bouzakis (SO)
    • 12-7 career record
    • 41st in Matscouts big board (2025)
  • Finn Solomon (SR)
    • 43-27 career record
    • 1x NQ
  • Prediction: Vince Bouzakis

South Dakota State 165: Drake Rhodes vs Jacob Herm

  • Drake Rhodes (SR)
    • 31-17 career record
    • 1yr starter
    • 1x NQ
  • Jacob Herm (SO)
    • 12-6 career record

    • 2yr starter
    • 2x NQ (1x R16)
  • Vince Bouzakis (SO)
    • 12-7 career record
    • 41st in Matscouts big board (2025)
  • Finn Solomon (SR)
    • 43-27 career record
    • 1x NQ
  • Prediction: Vince Bouzakis

South Dakota State 165: Drake Rhodes vs Jacob Herm

  • Drake Rhodes (SR)
    • 31-17 career record
    • 1yr starter
    • 1x NQ
  • Jacob Herm (SO)
    • 12-6 career record
  • Prediction: Jacob Herm

The 141 for Ohio State should have Karson Brown in there. Antonio Mills wouldn’t beat him or Bouzakis. Honestly there’s a good chance Brown beats out Bouzakis as well.
