This is actually a difficult topic, how many finalists can their be?  Some candidates:

  • Mesenbrink (undefeated 2x champ)
  • Jax (undefeated champ)
  • Vega (undefeated champ)
  • Haines (undefeated 2x champ)
  • Barr (undefeated champ)
  • Trumble (undefeated champ)
  • Lilledahl (undefeated champ)
  • Mendez (1 loss 2x champ)

I can't believe this is seriously discussed. If Messenbrink doesn't win the award is a farce and should be dumped in the waste bin of absurd ideas.

He will not win ... zero chance.

It will be a debate.  Jax, Barr and Vega all have serious claims given they are undefeated champs who had historic seasons.

It shouldn't be a debate at all. MM is so clear.

Is it though?  Barr was just as dominant (bonus in every match except the finals, and Mesenbrink had a 6-0 win in the semis).  Forrest blasted everyone in the hardest deepest weight.  Vega was undefeated as a true freshman and beat a 2x champ who was the head and shoulder Hodge favorite in Mendez...

Then factor in that Penn State could split Hodge votes 3 or 4 ways...

One year they made Carl share the hodge with a d3 guy with 4 losses on the year

Seems MM’s to lose, but Barr is in there, Levi, Vega, Jax, LL, Trumble.

With what? 7 undefeated champs, I don’t think anyone else makes the list of finalists.

There are criteria listed for the award no?

How does this group on undefeated champs breakdown according to the varying stated criteria??

Not so fast, Mr. Cinnabon.  MM has the highest dominance rating (points per match), the highest bonus percentage (since he had more matches than Barr) more pins, and more wins than any of the other candidates - plus he just won the MOW award at the NCAA championships.

While it's notable that Jax and Vega are true freshmen champs, that won't trump the above accomplishments by MM.

Everyone who is being so dismissive...I bet there were be at least 5 Hodge finalists, maybe even 6.  It's going to be an actual debate, not a slamdunk like you say.

Heck, they might even award the Hodge to multiple guys like they did before.

Are there any feel good stories from any other divisions this year? Nick Ackerman shared the Hodge with Cael one year after (2001? I think) winning a D3 title on NO LEGS, having lost them to a bacterial infection as an infant.

Twas a feel good story indeed.  Someone mentioned rules … as if they matter

1947 ... need we say more?

You never know.   It's possible for a coach to have 7 of 10 Big 10 champions, win every dual and not win conference coach of the year.  So, wrestling the full season and being undefeated with a 96% bonus rate might not be enough.

Caveira would disqualify him for not wrestling national duals.   Same for Jax I guess.

I think Vega knocking off a 2x champ and legit Hodge contender prior to the finals is worth a look

I guarantee both Forest and Vega will get some Hodge votes.

Vega it is!  🤠

Forrest won the deepest weight and was absolutely dominant as he did it. Plus he was in high school a few months ago which is insane.

Barr would be my second pick as he was equally dominant to messenbrink but doesn't act like a doofus.

33 was loaded, but I done see how it was any harder than 57, 65, or 84.

I hadn’t seen Vega wrestle before the tournament, but his performance at the NCAA was the only one I’d put in the same ballpark as MM.

Barr was not as dominant.  His bonus percentage was 95.83% to Mesenbrink's 96.30%.  They both only had one non-bonus match, but Mesenbrink wrestled more matches, thus he had a higher percentage.

Your comment that Barr "had bonus in every match except the finals, and Mesenbrink had a 6-0 win in the semis" is accurate but not persuasive.  One could just as easily say that "Mesenbrink teched his opponent in the NCAA finals while Barr was only able to win by decision."

Plus Mesenbrink was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Try your best, there's no way you can spin things to make it appear that this year's Hodge winner is anything but a foregone conclusion.

Agreed, Vega was just as impressive as Mesenbrink.

If it's so clear I suppose there will only be 1 finalist and they'll just forego the voting?
