This is the original post I responded to. It just said MMA, and by using the word funk Askren in particular comes to mind. How many guys that were succesful in wrestling due to “funk” have even seriously tried MMA? Seems like a small sample size. And even if you don’t want to give Askren credit for “beating” Lawler, you gotta give him credit for taking the beating that he did early on and continuing on in the fight. Based on what we saw this weekend I’m not sure Bo could have done the same.

Well...he's not my God, but I think Spencer Lee was destroy dude's in UFC.
-
Why are YOU guys responding to me and making this a Bo vs Askren...matchup or debate? I'm saying NEITHER of their styles was real conducive to winning in the UFC. I don't care how either did, but if someone uses Askren as an example...well, I think that's a LITTLE silly. How about Johnny Hendricks? He feels like a MUCH better example. Woodley or Koshchek, a LOT of other Wrestlers. It's not JUST limited to Bo and Ben.
-
Ok. I'd probably take your bet. If we're talking about how old Ben was, he was 5-6 years older than two of the guys he fought and the same age as Masvidal. Dana White didn't want him in the UFC because he didn't think he was good. He didn't do a whole lot to disabuse Dana of that notion...IMO. But this isn't really about Askren, I was merely making a point that a certain type of athlete transitions more easily. If you won buy rolling guys through on single legs or...funk, that's probably not going to help you as much in MMA as if you just...dominated guys by overpowering them and using your athletic ability(also Burroughs or the others I mentioned).
-
Correct. RDR actually got finished twice in a row before leaving ONE.
-
We've seen imperfect holds take people out and perfect holds not. You have to look at the reaction of the guy defending. Lawler's arm went limp. But like I said, that's not the point. The point is how you handle adversity. Askren battled back and got the dominant position. Bo folded mentally well before he folded physically.

Possibly El Salvador’s president doesn’t want to make him and the USA can’t compel him. -
My interpretation is. —> Spencer Lee is currently capable of making a world / Olympic team as he has made one. Bo. Well not so much As of now.
-
Askren was past his prime by the time he made the UFC. I’m no MMA expert but I’d bet a lot of guys Askren beat in the other leagues were better than anyone Nickal had fought before Saturday. And didn’t guy Bo lost to, come from the league Askren was in?
-
It was over a period of like 4 seconds. And I don't know what everyone in the arena knew. I knew I didn't think that looked like a real dangerous hold. It was a headlock with no arm. I also knew that I'd been disabused of that type of thinking the little MMA workout or training I had, so...whatever. If it's on Lawler or not, I didn't assign blame, I was just pointing out...he was not doing well in that fight and he didn't really win any exchanges... I consider that a win for him like I consider Zach Glazier the "Champ" of the 2023 Soldier Salute.

Is the D1 wrestling-to-UFC pipeline nearly closed?
BruceyB replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
I agree with most of @wrestle87's sentiment. I don't think many wrestlers 10-15 years ago necessarily wanted to do MMA, but after spending their lives committed to honing their skills, it was really the only avenue post college to make use of those skills. Very few wrestlers make world teams, and far fewer were winning medals during that time. You basically had to fundraise to gather enough money to pay your bills, let alone support a family. Very few guys would wrestle more than the rest of the quad that they graduated into. It seems like now with RTC's, RTC coaching staffs, the emergence of elite club programs being ran by former D1 wrestlers, there are just a lot more avenues to make a career with a wrestling background then there were before. I know Ben Askren is on record saying that if he could have made enough money to support his family that he likely would have at least stayed in the sport of wrestling for another quad before making the transition. Getting punched, kicked, and choked isn't fun. I doubt many would choose MMA if they could make a comfortable living while staying in the wrestling world. -
As for the bad stoppage, that was on Lawler for letting his arm go limp while getting choked. You see guys all the time actively letting the ref know they're okay to continue. Everyone in that arena thought Lawler was out. And yes, Askren got caught and KO'd. Anyone can get caught. But that's not the point. The point is Bo quit when he faced relatively mild adversity, while Askren battled back after getting it handed to him. Bo is more naturally gifted than Ben, but Ben was a legitimate fighter who didn't look for a way out.

Yeah, I "LITERALLY" didn't until you...I guess assumed I did and then replied to me. At THAT point, sure, I replied to you.

Well....that's like talking about how great a professional Baseball player was in AAA then. I mean...sure. But it's AAA.

The interviewer literally said “he had tattoos that can be interpreted that way,” and Trump said “no not interpreted. Clear as day!” lol - Today

I mean, he was 1-2 in UFC with Robbie Lawler...abusing him and Herb Dean with one of his worst mistakes(according to himself) by stopping the Askren Lawler match when he thought Lawler was chocked out. He...also was pretty notoriously knocked out in like...3-4 seconds after doing EXACTLY what Masvidal said he'd do, mocked him for doing...and then...as soon as the bell rang, he did it. It did not go well. So Lawler,Masvidal and Maia...and I don't recall how that went, but he didn't win and the guy was 40-41 and Askren was still like 34/35. This is kinda...what NOT to do as a Wrestler...no?
-
No, I'm not saying you're poorly informed because you're disagreeing with me, I'm saying it because...you're wrong. The right to protest or to freedom of speech is NOT reserved for citizens. It's absolutely afforded to anyone here on a student visa. That's a perfect way of putting it. It takes SOOO little if you are ignorant about the laws impacting those here on student visas or...any other types of visa, Green Cards, any other way you're on US Soil... it's actually amazing someone could be an adult and think this would be about ME disagreeing and just not understand Freedom of Speech or the 1st amendment and think that was somehow a personal thing.

You prob can’t see this anyway since it’s on FB. Just another guess to how it played out. https://www.facebook.com/reel/1212415187190671?fs=e&s=TIeQ9V&mibextid=0NULKw

Is the D1 wrestling-to-UFC pipeline nearly closed?
wrestle87 replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
You need to look beyond the UFC for information on this. You should include smaller promotions who pay their athletes far better, and you should also include juco and d2, maybe even d3 guys. I would say the pipeline to mma has not closed, but to the UFC yes, most likely. When the UFC was getting going and the first era of wrestlers were coming through, these were guys who went through college on rice and ketchup and who couldn't believe that they could get paid to use their skills in any way. This meant they were willing to accept sh*tty terms and crap treatment from UFC management. The first cohorts also got their start in an era before the UFC reebok deal, which wholesale killed the largest source of income for athletes. Dana white is a good businessman, but he is 100% the daniel plainview of MMA. He has shown time and again that he is happy to burn the livelihoods of 1,000 of people to further his own means by .5%. Like all truly obsessed people, he is sociopathic in his pursuit of his goals. No different from Jordan or Tiger. This means, quite simply, you don't want to work for the guy, and wrestlers have tended to look towards more competitive pastures for their entries into MMA. Bellator has a ton of US wrestlers. Dana also cares about markets, and he gets all his grapplers from Dagestan because that keeps Eastern European interest in the UFC alive. Also, now, with NIL, wrestlers are able to actually benefit from wrestling in college, and they aren't assuming they have to wholesale destroy their bodies in order to have any sort of livelihood. The expectations of the collective of competitors has evolved greatly, and that is awesome for everyone involved. The UFC is not a good thing to be involved in, both from a health and career perspective. -
