Is 285 the most overrated weight class of all time?
peanut replied to peanut's topic in College Wrestling
I guess the issue is this: Are there so many heavyweight stars because the likely thinnest weight class has impressively managed to produce many of the best overall wrestlers? Or are there so many heavyweight stars because the weight class is thin? -
From my understanding, Nolf isn't qualified for WTT.

Is 285 the most overrated weight class of all time?

I have long been a staunch believer that Wyatt Hendrickson is one of, if not the, best technician in the country but he was at least fourth on the ladder. That's no longer the case and he certainly stamped his way to best wrestler in the country this past season. There's still room on the bandwagon if anyone wants to hop on. -

Let’s pivot from the action that went down in Las Vegas back to the collegiate scene as there were a lot of transfer announcements that came through within the last week while our attention was focused elsewhere. Nebraska hasn’t hit the portal as hard and often as other trophy contenders; however, Mark Manning’s team received a strong addition at 149 lbs as two-time NCAA bloodround finisher Chance Lamer committed to the Huskers. Surrounded by NCAA finalists at 141 and 149 lbs, can this move be the one that pushes Lamer onto the NCAA podium? Also at 149 lbs, West Virginia adds three-time NCAA qualifier Willie McDougald, who comes over from Big 12 rival Oklahoma. In this game of musical chairs at 149 lbs, Jack Gioffre will replace McDougald at Oklahoma. Just a few weeks ago, the Sooners appeared to be out of the portal game. Gioffre’s addition will give Roger Kish’s squad five new additions within the past two weeks. Gioffre was a 2025 NCAA qualifier for Virginia and won two matches in Philly. Gioffre’s twin brother, Michael, announced he would be moving to Illinois. With the May 2nd deadline for portal entry rapidly approaching, I’d expect some additional portal entries in the near future. Seems to me a critique of the Hodge criteria would be more appropriate than nebulously labeling the 285 weight class as "overrated." It's not truly a "best wrestler in the country" award. -

Our NY dream would be for a big wrestling donor to revive a SUNY school like UAlbany or Stonybrook and bring in a major talent like Dake-----it is just a dream of course, but a well funded public D1 school in Albany or Long Island would do very well. It is too bad SUNY never made a true flagship campus as it is the only big population state not to do so. Honestly there is no reason Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany or Stony Brook could not have become a Michigan or Penn State -

Your statement is incorrect. Five push-outs will always score more points than two takedowns in MFS under the current rules, mathematically speaking. -
And better.

I just don’t see it as blatant in the education system as we get sold on. There are definitely bad actors in schools and in some policy makers, but overall I just don’t see it that heavy. I deal with a lot of schools in both my ‘regular’ job and in my wrestling ventures. And I feel like we get fed about the bad actors so densely and so loudly, that what we hear in certain media and certain govt entities does not reflect the reality. In my experiences, I just don’t see anywhere near the level of what we’re fed. What I see a lot more of is entitlement from parents. “My kid shouldn’t have to do this or that if it makes them uncomfortable.” What I see more in schools and policy, more so than higher levels pushing an agenda, is not having the balls to stand up to parents and saying…we’re the professionals, this is how it’s done, if you don’t like it you have other options. I say all of that with the understanding that my experiences are not everyone’s experiences.

Wokeness started with the creation of the dept of education in 1979 and has been the norm since Obama. All you can do is slow it down as it’s going to happen whether you like it or not. As I’ve said on here before if Dems would learn what “happening “organically” means instead of shoving it down peoples throats they’d have far more success. Also, Globalism (NWO) coming whether we want it to or not. Even the Nationalist Trump knows it which is why he’s trying to position the US as best he can for the future when it does. That being said you can’t stop it, just impact it/direct it as best you can while you can.
