Who said HOF? I was just saying the guy is a good coach, when @bnwtwg said he wasn't.

Yes, the HOF was intended to be hyperbole but you were flabbergasted that there is still wide range on his potential has a coach.  He did a good job coaching 1 of 10 guys for 1 season.

Chertow was an assistant on a runner-up team and that being Gilman's floor is not crazy.

You serious? Troy Spratley went from R12 to national finalist (with a win over the dude that beat Spencer Lee) and sounded like he was working almost exclusively with Gilman. I'd say the dude can coach, and coach well.

He should get credit for Spratley but 125 is such a toss up weight.   He was at PSU last year when Davis didn't AA and none of their other lightweight at OSU AA'd, including 133 who didn't qualify for NCAAs.

He did a good job this year but he has only coached for 1 year.   Let's not put him in the HOF of coaches just yet.

I'm guessing Pinto didn't like the cut down to 174. He dwarfed Haines. I was kind of shocked to see how much bigger he was in comparison.

I actually thought Pinto looked better at 174 once he got acclimated to the weight.  He always seemed a little puffy at 184.  Haines was coming up from 157 so while I think he filled out the weight well, I don't know if he was the biggest 174 either.

  4. UNC is a good school but its not impossible to get into.  Has admissions standards similar to Michigan and other top B1G schools. Plus they make exceptions for really good basketball players, I am sure they can get AJ in, who probably has a respectable transcript.

I assume UNC main donor/NIL person s the guy that lured Koll to comback.   I haven't seen the rumor of AJ's deal, but I would almost bet its going to be inflated more than his actual deal.

Interesting.  Iowa was the speculation ever since he took his Medical year and they need a 197.   All of the other contenders don't really need a 197 (to my knowledge) so it could Iowa or bust.

It'll be a 23 minute long video of him saying how he's changed and loves god now. He'll misquote at least 3 verses. Ten seconds to announce the program he chose. Then another 14 of how despite not being vain the program he chose is good for his brand, while wearing a new t-shirt he'll be selling soon. Then he'll go through a few new slogans he's trying out.

But will we get an update on his deadlift or a new split double ::hand gesture:: as part of the announcement??

I think Keuter is gonna be the next kyle dake

What does that mean?  Not hating but when I think of Dake I think 4xer, went up every year in college, stuck behind a legend on the international scene before breaking through and winning worlds.     Kueter can be a world champ but curious why you used Dake as the comp?

I never said Manning doesn't want local kids.

I said he doesn't go after every Nebraska star that there is.

Not every Nebraska star is B1G caliber.  Obviously Trumble is and they did go after him, just lost the recruiting battle.

One, the fact that PSU had Ryder, who most see as being on Welsh's level, making it illogical for PSU to affirmatively seek out Welsh as a replacement.

Two, the fact that Welsh had a prior history of discontent at OSU that is unrelated to PSU, with a confirmed visit to OSU back in December and Ryan having to publicly quell the fire back.

Three, Welsh's stated reason for preferring PSU -- that he wanted a stronger training room -- meshes well with his discontent at OSU, where he asked them to get better RTC guys but they weren't able to.

Four, Welsh's own words, disclaiming that PSU was ever a foregone conclusion, but rather was one of a couple of frontrunners at the time.

Fifth, the fact that the Mineo "done deal" tweets proved to be false (unless you call Welsh a liar), given his indication that he fielded numerous offers, and given the fact that he didn't commit right away.

Sixth, the fact that PSU was offering less $ than other schools.

Seventh, the fact that Welsh isn't exactly Cael's "type":  all tatted up, a temper, apparently not recruited by PSU in high school.

Eight, Starocci's pro-Ryder tweet, and Ryder's later departure, suggest that all of this happened very suddenly from PSU's perspective, as it wasn't pre-vetted with the team or Ryder.

Ninth, the general absurdity of the notion that Cael, with a bunch of consecutive titled and strongly favored to win at least the next couple as well, would suddenly throw it all away by engaging in massive recruiting violations that could cost him his job and get him and his team suspended from competition.

Tenth, the utter lack of any facts or evidence cutting the other way.  Even Ryan, who's quick to whine about virtually everything, hasn't said a single sour word toward PSU about this.

    ***

How about you. Do you have any facts that this was a massive conspiratorial rule-violating poaching of a competitor, planned and executed by those evil cackling PSU miscreant coaches?

    I'll wait.

Holy Strawman, Batman...   Saying the word "fact" before making a statement doesn't actually make it true.

What are you talking about?? Not one person has accused PSU of a rule violation or a massive conspiracy, including myself, who just challenged the ridiculous notion that Rocco is only getting some minimal NIL deal that all PSU athletes get.    Just because you offer less than somone else doesn't meant PSU is offering nothing or the minimum deal everyone else gets.

Cael recruiting over Ryder isn't a crime, rule violation or conspiracy, but it is a fact because it actually happened.

    im from nebraska fool

you dont have to be a douche constantly.

    2 guys out of 30.

is that really what you are coming at me with?

    could trumble have beaten allred?

schultz was done 3 years ago... could have been trumble's spot. especially since allred went down.

and even then, maybe trumble wanted the HWT spot. how would that have sat with you.

my point stands... manning wants the guys with the goods. trelli and lauridsen have the goods.

trumble did too... that's why i was suprised, i never heard much from that

Nebraska did go after Trumble, but were a little late and couldn't make up the ground NCSt had made by getting in early.

Nebraska HS talent has come a long ways recently but it wasn't good enough for the first 20 years Manning was in Lincoln to build a strong B1G team.   I don't think they did not want NE kids but they probably were defaulting to the areas where they had built strong recruiting ties over the local scene that hadn't historically produce D1 AAs regularly.

What I'm hypothesizing is that, in Welsh's case, it was probably just the first.  When he called and said "I wanna go there" I would imagine PSU said "great, here's what we can give in scholarships next year (if anything), and here's what our NIL collective pays per month."

No chance Rocco is getting the same deal that Gary Steen was getting (before he transferred).

It does mean he is teasing.

But as I said several posts back, if it is not Trumble it will be someone else. If Nebraska wants to stay competitive.

You are really reading a ton into the "we build, we don't buy" quote.  Getting 1 or 2 guys to supplement holes doesn't mean you "bought" a trophy, especially when the other trophy teams have more transfers and are spending more on NIL.

He never said they wouldn't go after a top transfer either.

Manning acknowledged they use NIL, but they don't have the NIL money to spend as much as other programs so they have to build guys.

  13. It wasn't the schedule.  He wasn't even the most dominate wrestler on his own team, but the strength of competition at 184 put him above MM who was more dominate.

Carter is the reason Carter didn't win the Hodge.  He wanted to control matches and not take much risk so he could win matches.   Thanks to the 3 point TD, he was able to increase his bonus rate but he wasn't out trying to dominate or tech his opponents.

If Carter went for techs and domination, he would of won the Hodge.

It's an interesting question what PSU should do in this situation.

Let's assume (and I know some question this) that Welsh's transfer was initiated by Welsh, and PSU, knowing he was a luxury but not a need, didn't do much more than say "sure we'd love to have you" without throwing any NIL money at him (at least not beyond what the cooperative pays).

Let's also assume that Welsh and Ryder are basically interchangeable.  (I think they are.)

    Questions:

--Should PSU have checked with Ryder first?

--If they check with him, and he says "I don't want that, I'll transfer if you bring him in," should they let Welsh transfer anyway?  Or should they say "Sorry Rocco, we're good, maybe try somewhere else."

One answer is that while PSU should give Ryder a courtesy heads up, PSU should bring Welsh in no matter what, on the theory that you should never turn down new talent (unless he's got personal baggage). If a guy doesn't want to compete for their spot, that's counter to the team's open-door philosophy, and they're probably better off elsewhere anyway.

But on the other hand, I feel like this is a net loss for PSU.  They make an even exchange, Ryder for Welsh, but Welsh has one less year of eligibility, and they don't know how Welsh will gel with the team.  And other PSU recruits, especially those who bonded with Ryder, feel unsettled/annoyed, destabilizing the team.

I think I lean toward the first answer, but curious what others think.

    - This assumes a huge falsehood that Rocco isn't getting any NIL.

    - What should PSU do when Rocco called?   It's crazy no one thinks Cael could of said "we like our guy at 184" He does have he ability to say no thanks.   He wanted Rocco or Rocco wouldn't be on campus and he surely knew losing Ryder was a risk he was willing to take.  You don't check with Ryder first unless his response changes your decision to take Rocco.

    - These kids only get 4 years to wrestle, while there a few room guys happy to be on the team, you can't blame Ryder for wanting to maximize his limited time in NCAA wrestling.  Even if he thinks he can beat Rocco.

  15. Welsh said he wants to go 184.

I don't know why Barr would go down, he is the returning finalist   If PSU buys AJ and bumps him to HWT, then it eliminates his biggest threat and Barr will enter next year as a strong favorite.

Marasolas might need to get "hurt" playing dodgeball and get a medical to avoid losing a year of eligibility.
