I think it would be Eisch or a transfer if that happens. Eisch is serviceable but not nearly as good as Wells. I hope he can make 133 again but is registered at 65kg for the US Open. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think rushing a kid out there too early just to squeeze as much out of them right away puts you at a greater risk of losing them than taking the long term approach does. Especially if they’re not successful as a true freshman (most are not). Even a kid like Sergio Lemley who had a great regular season got bounced 1-2 at NCAA’s. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jamison and Spratley redshirted because they were not better than the person ahead of them. They transferred because when they were done redshirting, they still were not guaranteed their spots (especially Jamison, as shown by NCAA’s). What should have been done differently there? I do not understand the panic against redshirting recruits. The overwhelming majority of transfers are grad transfers, the result of coaching changes, or guys in year 2 or 3 that can’t crack their lineup. Very few are legitimately being poached like Aaron Nagao. I think it is an overblown sentiment, and that’s coming from someone who roots for a team that has been more negatively impacted by the portal than any. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That’s all fine and good that you think that, but what about any of that makes you think Hopke is going to hit the portal before he’s even on campus? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Seems like you’re worried about the portal for every gopher with no rhyme or reason as to why. Hopke seems fully committed and has a slight meniscus injury that might cause him to redshirt regardless, depending on how the US Open goes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I do think Salazars starting spot is in jeopardy, because McEnelly is a phenom and Salazar is small for 197. I have been told 174 is an option but if it can’t work, I’m not sure what will happen. Nelson is a highly ranked recruit that had a comparatively rough redshirt record, but he’s way bigger than Salazar and super talented. If Salazar goes the 197 route, I could see him losing his spot at either 184 or 197. The thing I don’t understand is with the portal closes May 3rd, they will not have roster battles decided by then. Is there a second window closer to the season that a senior who loses his spot could enter and still wrestle his last year? If Salazar were to hit the portal, I don’t see him and Vance as a package deal the same way Spratley and Jamison were. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Admittedly, I didn’t know a thing about Askey prior to him entering the portal and when I did a little more digging my impression aligned with yours. He didn’t have any great wins prior to NCAA’s last year and some rougher losses. He will certainly have a tougher schedule with Minnesota. He is coming in to a potentially favorable position at least in the big ten with guys like Lewan, Robb, Franek, Brayton graduating. 157 is projecting to be a comparatively weak weight in the conference next year. Wrestlestat currently has Askey rated 11th overall and 3rd in the big ten, behind Antrell Taylor and ahead of Saldate. I could see him exceeding expectations at Minnesota for his last year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he flopped either. I’m happy to have him regardless, because we had a massive hole there for one year while a recruit redshirts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think a line up of.. 157 Taylor 165 Bubba 174 Brown ton Is a decent bit better than 157 Askey 165 Taylor 174 Bubba Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’d be surprised if the ones in their last year or two did, O’toole, Keckeisen, etc. I’d also be surprised if Mesenbrink did. But the ones that are going in next year or are only a year or so in? Sinclair, Millard, Riddle, some of the others I’d expect to go home. I’ve been told to expect all the Minnesota AWA kids to head over if he’s hired. That’s the part I feel confident in. It’s past ridiculous to me. I’m ready for real team competition. That’s when the NCAA tournament and the season as a whole is most fun to watch. Doesn’t even have to be my team as the ones contending, though that helps haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Willie on his show this week said it’s been decided for months that Hamiti was going 174 next year. Regardless of if that was at Wisconsin or not. Must have been a tougher cut than most realized, including me. I thought he looked lean too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don’t understand that statement either. I don’t even see Cunningham ever starting there. Maybe in spots like Barraclaugh. He’s good, but not on the level of some of the others they’ve brought in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If Ben Davino can make 125 and be healthy doing so, he will win multiple titles. I feel confident in that. Especially if Luke Lilledahl is at 133. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
These two have the capability to elevate a school to the level that they could actually contend with Cael as a team in the next ten years. I doubt it happens, but if both were to end up at Oklahoma state, for example, they could actually push the likes of PJ Duke, Lilledahl, Sealey, Ryder, the Mirasola’s etc from a tournament perspective. Would be fun and good, imo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When was the last time, outside of gable, that a true freshman heavyweight was a significant point scorer at NCAA’s year one? Honest question Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
