Iowa hits its 60% transfer starter quota again
JeanGuy replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I have said this in the past but being around a Power 5 Football program for many years I will say that if Ferentz really had plans for Kueter I don't believe they would have let him take a year off. I am not doubting his desire to do both but you really need to be fully dedicated to one or the other to have success. -
I really thought Buchanan was the only guy that really looked to have a real horsepower edge on Barr. Granted he didn't wrestle everybody but I am not sure 2025 Barr could beat 2025 Buchanan if they wrestle 10 more times. Hard to say how he would do against Ferrari.

I think he has elite defense. Having something elite makes you a tough out wherever you are. He likely could get to a good 230lbs pretty easy. He would be in the title discussion

I remember the folks back in 1950 complaining about OSU.

Anticipated matches we never got to see
JeanGuy replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
we get so excited about the next freshman phenom that it really skews views of wrestlers. Look at Shapiro. Was projected as an All-Timer coming into NCAA Wrestling, now he has a 3rd and 5th place finish. Will he ever win a title? I think the Starocci v Keckeisen was the most anticipated by the majority. Many thought (hoped) there was no way that Starocci get beat him but he did and wasn't really close to being taken down. People don't like Starocci but I really do believe he is an All Time great. He isn't known as a scorer but finished with a 59% bonus rate. I wanted to see the 285 final that we got. I think Kerkvliet was beaten by Steveson before they start. It was nice to see someone match the athleticism -
He is a world class freestyle wrestler not a ham and egger. I wouldn't worry about his folk skill set not being up to par

Interesting how Steveson became the villain

Depends on how overboard they go. I doubt he will be unbeatable, former WWE star, and former NFL player. -
Interesting how Steveson became the villain

I can recognize that my cheering against GS was mostly due to jock sniffing media. They latch on and try to build a narrative and for me that makes me want to go in the opposite direction. -
Meyer Shapiro Steroids Accusation

Some guys not used to losing don't lose well. Can't be me. They are cheating. -
Penn State w/ 2 Falls 4 Majors in 3rd and 5th matches

Or us he? Sometimes he is anti-PSU and sometimes he is a PSU homer. -
With as little as they wrestle now you could probably shorten the season. If you are trying to get to 15 matches or so you only need 5 weekends and a single tournament.

Can you quantify greatest by what style a guy wrestlers? I guess you can. Some guys just won't break position no matter what. So guys will go for it no matter what. People like the second guy because it is entertaining, and you never know what will happen. The first can be just as excellent if not more so. To-ma-to vs To-mahh-to

It is hard to really laud AJ because he hasn't really wrestled. He only is at 46 career matches as this point. He has completed in one NCAA Championship.

What do we assume is the Gable way? Most great coaches have the ability to figure out what the athlete needs to excel. Some guys need the hard @$$ coach while others need the buddy coach. Great coaches can be both. Figuring out what makes guys tick is the trick. The other thing is to know yourself and recruit guys that let you be yourself most of the time. Cael probably won't chase a guy that needs a Manning in his corner. I don't think that Cael could have gotten out of DeSanto what Brands did. There is nothing wrong at Iowa. I can assure everyone here that in two weeks there will only be 10 guys win national championships, and they will come from various schools. Same with the All-Americans. If Iowa has zero champs and 6 AA's (which I think is their floor) is it a successful tournament? I think so.

How Teemer wrestled you can debate but he did wrestle all the way through the consolation rounds when he didn't look physically good.
-
After this season and the way things went does he leave Iowa? I know he has said that he is happy there, but it could be him being a good team guy by not airing dirty laundry in public.

I don't think it had anything to do with be asked to step aside. If there is bad feelings it was about letting Downey get the nod in 2019 because Taylor didn't show at Finals X. He he known Taylor was sitting he might have made a run at 86kg.

Keuter - will he develop into a top tier heavy?
JeanGuy replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I have no clue. My experience is an acquaintance worked for a B1G football coach and when you are close to it you get a feel for how things work. It is just pure speculation on my part so I very likely could be wrong. -
Keuter - will he develop into a top tier heavy?
JeanGuy replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
I think Keuter can be a very good 285, but only if he is training wrestling year-round. I have said before and will say it again knowing how big time CFB works I believe that Keuter was told to wrestle by Ferentz because he didn't view him as being in their plans. I could be wrong, but those guys are taking care of themselves not entertaining the desired of a kid torn between two worlds. If Ferentz believed Keuter is on the 2-deep or 3-deep he does not let him pause football for a year. Just not how that sport typically works. -
I would tend to agree. can't imagine either Brands or Kennedy wouldn't, but if say if Brands went and would miss he probably doesn't have a good case for an at-large.

Do you think they have any concern over allocations?
-
I think it is a little different. Steveson left college wrestling after the national tournament in 2022. Did some other stuff that didn't pan out and came back in 2024/25 season. So, he missed 2022-23 and 2023/24 but was given a magical redshirt. Starocci was a college wrestle the entire time. I didn't say he shouldn't be allowed to compete, I just said I could see him not getting a ton of support for the Hodge.
