  1. Wrestlestat has them 81st of 81 in D1 with a starting lineup including one senior, one sophomore and eight freshmen. I wish them luck, but this year is going to be a struggle. As I noted in the previous post, I hope there are smaller opens on the schedule where their kids can pick up some wins and confidence.
  2. I know it's not about this year. But, improvement typically happens in stages. Take a step up, get better recruits, take another step up, etc. Hopefully there are some smaller opens not listed on this schedule where the current team can perform and gather confidence so that they are as prepared as possible for Year 2 and more attractive to future recruits.
  3. God bless the ambition - you do want to have a few high profile events to capitalize on the attention the program will have in its first season - but this seems a bit much for a team that will likely finish 18th at the EIWAs if they are admitted to the conference this year.
  4. NC State's success would seem to indicate success at UNC is not that big of a stretch, and I think we all know how much UNC hates to be 2nd choice to NC State in anything. Also, if Koll takes the job, I'm guessing the financial commitment from the school and his fundraising abilities follow.
  5. I think all bets are off at Stanford until they get their football situation fixed. Could see another effort to cut some Olympic sports. Koll may be doing what's best for Koll. If so, can't blame him, and can't expect him to rescue Stanford twice. On a side note, as a swim dad, there is something going on with the women's swim team. Massive roster defections. Some OLY redshirts, maybe NIL money. Could be more going on at the Farm than just wrestling.

  7. I'm good with this. After I've seen one wrestler score seven straight TDs, I'm ready to move on to the next match.
  8. Good for TMS. She has enough size and boatloads of personality for pro wrestling. But, as we've seen with Gable, the transition from "real" sports to pro wrestling is not so easy or obvious. Best of luck to TMS. She is a credit to our sport and country.
  9. Unfortunately, most of the world thinks the World Cup is a nuisance. I don't believe there is the tradition of dual meet competition elsewhere as there is here. Too bad - some of the past US-USSR duals were absolute classics. Maybe scheduling the World Cup every four years - in Year of the Olympic quad - would be helpful? Host is in the next Olympic site as a test event?
  10. Hoping Gable realizes how much money/impact he can have continuing in "amateur" wrestling. He is a generational talent whose notoriety goes far beyond our corner of the sports world.
  11. Pennsylvania RTC @pennsylvaniartc Hale loses 7-2 to Zahid Valencia. He will move on to the consolations. #USOpen2023
  12. Of note: Pennsylvania RTC @pennsylvaniartc Hale wins 5-5 on criteria to advance to the quarterfinals at 86kg! #USOpen2023 4:17 PM · Apr 27, 2023 ·
  13. This is a joke, right?
  14. As I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm not as close to the team as I once was. (Swim meets get in the way.) But, since you asked: 1) There is still a significant gap between M. Colaiocco and Mougalian. 2) I agree with Indiana-Hawk-Wrestling-Fan - I would expect newcomers to man both 149 and 157 unless CJ moves up. (No inside knowledge, but CJ is wrestling 65 KG this weekend at the US Open.) 3) No reason why Hale won't be the starter next year. He was 1st team All-Ivy, and his progress this year was a bright spot. 4) Athleticism is already an issue with Urbas and would only be exacerbated at 184. The Urbas-Cosgrove question at 197 will be an interesting one.
  15. Follow through has not been one of Rulon's strengths post-wrestling career. I'm at least happy his weight is under better control for the time being. He owes us nothing wrestling-wise.
  16. You are correct. Thanks for catching.
  17. And a lot of disrespect for the rest of the field. I don't know the rest of the field well, but Coon seems like the absolute worst draw Rulon could've had in the semis if Coon is sharp. However, if Coon continues to get caught "in between" high and low offense, Rulon could make Coon's life really difficult.
  18. Sometimes you're the bull, sometimes you get the horns. I'm am so happy Penn (and the rest of the Ivies) are largely out of this space. Now if we could just fix the no competing as a grad student rule.
  19. Well, the good news... at least Rulon is under 300 lbs again.
  20. I've been doing audience and consumer research for about 30 years. Cord cutting is definitely a factor in Nielsen's viewing estimates, which both do and do not streaming content depending on the source and how we're calculating audience data. But, neither would account for this large of a year over year audience drop. IMO, stars and stories mattered more. Do not underestimate the lack of crossover stars in this year's tournament. Yianni D. is not Gable Steveson, and four titles may be really cool to we wrestlers but is not as unique as it was for either Dake or Cael. Plus, don't underestimate the impact of other programming on this year's audience ratings. The first weekend of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament was absolutely wild - ironic that all of those upsets led to lower ratings for the Final 4 and championship game given the lack of blue bloods at the end - or the impact of a generational talent (Caitlin Clark) playing in the women's tournament. At the end of the day, casual fans had a lot of intriguing viewing options that weekend. Moving the tournament to April - I'm intrigued by the unique place the Frozen Four has between March Madness and the start of the NBA and NHL Playoffs - may be helpful for audience ratings. As for me, I was at my son's district swimming championships and didn't watch a match either Day 2 or 3 of the tournament. Life gets in the way. 21. Love almost all of this. The 3 point take down is long overdue. We'll no longer see tie matches where an escape and riding time equals a takedown, which often sent boring matches into OT. Wish they had kept the 4 point near fall. I think we all understand there is a big difference between two seconds of exposure and four seconds of exposure. If a change was going to be made, why not just three points for a two second exposure so that takedowns and near falls earned the same reward? The new riding time rule will be probably just turn some regular decisions into major decisions.
  22. I see your 1971 and raise you my first car, a 1967 Pontiac LeMans. Loved that vehicle. Got a lusty 10 MPG with old fashioned regular fuel. Surprised I survived those front seat lap belts.
  23. I used to like Masvidal. But, at some point, you are the company you keep.
  24. Stunned Roselli couldn't make it work at OU. "Resources" (i.e. money) are not a problem at the school. And, while potential declines in the in-state talent pool may be impacting them and OSU, this program should be much. much better. I'm old enough to remember when the OU fans/alums were disappointed with the 2nd place performances under Stan Abel. Don't they wish they had those years now.
  25. That big drop you see is the SEC "deemphasizing" the sport in 1981.
