Let’s just hope this young man has learned from his actions and moved forward a better person after paying for his actions.

With that said , we should all hope the victim has recovered and is coping with what happen to him.  I am sure they’re are constant reminders of the incident in his life.  Mature adults on a wrestling forum should be the last to bring these memories back to light. Bringing Blumes age is one thing but to reference the pencil incident is wrong.

He was 17, should’ve been charged as an adult. It’s crazy IAwrestle continues to promote him yet won’t open the comments on any of their platforms. Just trying to bring attention to this matter, I don’t understand how he was continued to wrestle for the same high school while his victim had to transfer schools. Furthermore don’t understand why any NCAA program would recruit him let alone the team national champs

Damn.  Googled it.  Ouch

The arrest was related to a hazing incident that occurred in January 2022. Blume was accused of stripping a fellow student of their clothes and assaulting them with a pencil.

That’s another problem I have with the whole situation. See how it’s labeled as a hazing incident instead of felony penetrative assault which is what he was found guilty of. It’s sad how common place these type of incidents are in the sport

Are you sure they recruited him?  D3 doesn’t give athletic scholarships and looks like Wartburg is only like 90 miles from his high school

He committed to them spring of senior year so it’s not like he was a walk on or anything. I’ll change my verbiage from “recruited by” to “allowed on the team by” and Wartburg looks just as bad

I don’t see how they can keep him off the team without opening themself up to lawsuits unless he broke any rules since being in college

Coach’s are not required to let you walk on to their team in d3.   They wanted him and his points at NCAAs.

I agree with all said on this.  Living in Iowa at the time of this incident  I can tell you it was all over the news.  In my opinion there were several failures by the adults involved.

  • The coaches allowed him to wrestle the weekend tournament the week it was reported.  Several teams backed out of the tourney heightening the news coverage.
  • The School System handed down minimal punishment allowing him to continue with in class schooling at same school as victim.  This led to two members of the School Board resigning in protest of the lack of punishment.
  • DA office reduced charges down to a hazing, no detail explanation never giving as why the did after what the detective already filed as assault.
  • His parents with help of either higher ups in DA or School System got the charges reduced from charging as an adult to charging as a juvenile.
  • His dad was way out of hand publicly about the incident and how unfair his son was being treated.  Threaten several lawsuits against the County and School Board.
  • Victims parents probably fed up and lack of support ask that the charges be dropped.

At the time it was stated Blume was being recruited by SDSU, North Dakota State, ISU and others.  All of those offers or recruitment came to end after incident was made public.

The positive comments on fb seem to far outweigh the negative.  I randomly looked at like 5 ish posts.   Every one seems to be shut down once someone mentions the pencil.

JFC. "Assaulting with a pencil" I am assuming the worst case scenario for what this means and thatt is very disturbing.

This way beyond a hazing incident and the way it was addressed is mind blowing.
