Crablegs Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Why do wrestlers take the headgear off first thing after the match ends? Seems simple to just keep it on until hands are raised and they leave the mat. Just like singlet straps.

Why can they keep on a headgear for 7 minutes but the second the match ends the headgear needs to come off?

For all the observers who have said (mostly elsewhere) that "a rule is a rule", the actual rule says that unsportsmanlike conduct may include (the actions listed). The way it's written leaves a lot of discretion to the referee....but it's all depending on what is unsportsmanlike. The Princeton wrestler's dropping his headgear was not unsportsmanlike. There is plenty of stuff that happens on and around the mat that doesn't get called. Vito slammed his fist on the mat and used a bad word when he gave up a takedown to Glory in the 3rd period of their NCAA semi's match in '22. I certainly wouldn't have called that, and the ref didn't. It probably never occurred to him. I wonder if the ref thought he had no choice. It looked to me as though that's what they were communicating when JoeD questioned the call.

I teach my wrestlers that you have to have command of your emotions. If you cant instill that in your guys, who are you? I miss my boy Cletus

Nak21 Posted January 28 Posted January 28 That’s a sh!tty way to lose a dual. But rules are rules. I don’t know, maybe leave it on for 30 more seconds and don’t risk losing ticky tacky team points? All these guys are in such a rush to get their head gear off immediately the second the match ends.
CHROMEBIRD Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Not many of you know this, but shortly after Louden pinned Shute and the movie faded to black, Thompson High was dinged a team point for the celebratory headgear toss. They ended up losing the dual to Hoover HS because Ballzoder didn't bonus.

ugarles Posted January 28 Posted January 28 imo the physical action is clearly a toss (casual, with a little flick to make it spin), it happened while he had one foot in the circle, and it was an absolutely awful call. ]at least one cornell wrestler did something much more egregious against either brown or harvard and i held my breath. it was a casual "putting my gear near the bench" toss from a lot closer to the center of the mat before turning around for the handshake, nothing remotely out of line, but i was absolutely worried the ref was going to do something stupid.
