He came legally.

Damn European bacteria.

Amazingly he colonized the west in 4 voyages.

You should read up on your history if you think that's the only killing you think he did.

He never even made landfall in North America, so why is he celebrated here?

In short, pressure from Italian-Americans. As it relates to becoming a federal holiday, stemming from NYC Italian-Americans.  But where it really started gaining steam nationally, can kind of think of it as a sort of reparations for Italian-Americans who were treated not so kindly as being thought of being loyal to Italy during WW2

Ok, if you want to be pedantic.  He never made landfall in the continental US.

no your statement  is pedantic;  to argue that the Caribbean is not  North America

So you think he and his men killed 20 million people with swords and primitive firearms?

No.

I know that he (and his Spanish colleagues) killed tens of thousands (at the minimum) of the indigenous inhabitants of Haiti and the Dominican Republic where he landed - either through enslavement, execution, or mutilation. He wrote about it in his personal diary, which you can read for yourself.

For example, he placed a gold tax on the natives. Unfortunately for them, there was no gold on the island. Punishment for failing the tax was amputation of a hand. They usually bled out afterwards. Those that fled were hunted down and killed.

Not everybody is as ignorant as you. Some people actually do read books and know things about history and the world.

Bro, I knew this without just looking it up on ai... unlike some people.  I mean, you just looked it up and copy and pasted it! Look at my previous comment, you will see that I have a pretty good grasp of the history.  I have actually read excerpts of the diary, and not from ai or google.  Can you say the same?

He wasn't a great guy by 2025 standards and maybe not even 1492 standards, but he didn't kill 20+  million people.  Not that Columbus is a hero of mine, but I challenge you to find any of your personal heroes from the past who stand up to 2025 levels of scrutiny.

Still waiting for your post congratulating Trump on the ceasefire!

1) I didn't say he killed 20 million people. I said he was an immigrant who committed crimes, which you seem to acknowledge is true. You have a hard on for me so you jumped in trying to play gotcha and fell on your face again.

2) Nothing I wrote was copy or pasted or AI. It was memory from a book I read 15 years ago.

3) Good job by Trump on the ceasefire. Shows how morally bankrupt Biden is. That deal has been on the table for nearly 2 years. Trump finally had the stones to force the Israelis to accept it (should have done it much earlier, but better late than never). Hopefully, he holds them to their word.

You don't read books... you fall into the "and things" category

I read books for a living.

Stop obsessing over me. It's pathetic.

Hahaha! Obsessing over you?  I respond to posts I agree with or disagree with, or maybe feel I can add to.  It just so happens you say a lot of things that fall into those categories.  I don't follow you around, nor do I comment on all of your posts.  We have had people here who do that. You don't like when people routinely beat you in battles of intellect.  I get it.

1. You literally downplayed the effects of pathogens, and I set you straight.

3. Why so silent on the ceasefire.  It is almost all you have posted about for years.  You come on a wrestling forum to talk about... Gaza.  Then silence when there is real progress toward ending the situation.  Almost as if you didn't really care about the starving children and cared more about other things...

You do not read books for a living.

To be fair, he didn’t discover it.  There were already people there, for a loooooooong time.  He was the first European to land there. And the facts are he did so thinking he was in Asia.

Personally don’t have any issue with people celebrating his voyage (although the things reversal says about him are in fact true), much like I don’t understand people having a problem those who are celebrating it as Indigenous Day. For me….its a day off work, nothing more, nothing less.  Yay.

However, unfortunately, the story we were told about Columbus and his voyage as we were growing up was not exactly the accurate picture. And if we are going to memorialize these things, there’s nothing wrong with remembering the accurate picture.

First European to land there in almost 500 years!

I do think he "discovered" the Americas, but others had already made the discovery.  He is just the first one to go back and spread the news.  I think it is helpful to look at it as three discoveries: 1) the Paleo-Indians; 2) The Vikings; 3) Columbus

Everything else, I pretty much agree with you.

Actually probably a better way of stating it.  Thanks.
