my heart bleeds today!!!   yesterday was time to send my 12 year old hunting buddy to heaven !!

One my tougher days was putting to sleep our 17 year old black lab. She was still very alert and full of love. But her body had just slowly deteriorated. I am very sorry. They are really good companions.

GMF - I feel ya.   We had to put down lab brothers a year apart.   They were 12 and 13 and just couldn't do it anymore.   The last day for the 13 year old (blackjack) I got him up to get him out of the kennel and he stumbled all over the place and laid down and didn't want to move.   The poor guy.   His brother (buddy) had to be put down a year earlier do to jaw cancer type issues.   Wasn't eating anymore.    

In both cases, they were not being dogs anymore and there was no point to making them suffer like that.   It was heart wrenching for sure.

Started not doing the stairs 5 months ago thought it was just knees. glucosamine didnt help. found He had lymphoma 2 months ago. on prednisone for last month and half, just starting to have trouble with food and bowel movement. We had a good short walk last day couldn't let his last day be his worst. scheduled an update visit but knew what the recommendation would be. Second of 2 springers; first days in 20 years without a dog. somethings missing

Yeah, I still miss our dogs.   We had 3 black labs.   The first got run over on the highway at 4 years old.   He was an incredibly smart dog.   They are all buried on our property.
