There have been five wrestlers who made the final every year as either the #1 or #2 seed AND faced either the #2 or #1 seed.

Name the Fab Five.

Without looking anything up..

Stieber - #1 J.O., #2 Ramos, #2 Carter, #2 Port?

Ben Askren - Pendleton, Pendleton, Herbert, Gavin

This whole thing started with me looking at Askren, but sadly he was a #6 seed his freshman year.

Ah. I wasn't sure what his seed was that year. Okay, so I have Steve Mocco.

Nailed it.

Mocco is a fun one. He has to be the answer to another trivia question. Who is the only wrestler to wrestle exactly to his seed every year? Twice as a #2 seed he finished second, twice as a #1 seed he won it all.

Now I need to check if there are any others.

Cael had Eggum 2x, Cormier and Trenge.  Don't remember all their seeds but they were all top guys so there's a chance.  Or was it Eggum, Vertus Jones, Cormier Trenge?  Think the former, but either way I'll keep it.

The latter, but Cormier was the #3 seed. This is why I always said Sanderson was over rated.

Not Hodge, either Brands, Barry Davis, Kolat, Brooks, Dake, Taylor..

But one of the fab five IS Dan Gable.

Edit: No Banach, Carr, or Zalesky, or Guerrero..

Dan Gable qualifies as one!

The bad news is I messed up my join. Turns out there are only four of these guys, not five.

The good news is you are half way there.

My hint is you have already found the only four timer.

Give me this hint.. would this likely be the first time I've heard of either of the two remaining wrestlers?

Tom and Terry Brands?

Neither were finalists as freshman. I don't think it's going to be any of the big names, but it's definitely possible I overlooked someone. I've dug pretty deep, but not too deep pre-1960.
