Why is every ref 100 lbs. overweight?  Some can barely move around the mat.

some are obese and some are women as well... very perplexing.

I think freestyle is way worse than folkstyle. Not that folkstyle refs are Greek gods or anything but they're in generally good shape for their ages.

Damn. This post made my day

Not sure how many people remember the FFWOA from the late 80s into the 90s. They actually made shirts labeled that way (Many Xs). The requirement to being included was that you couldn't make the heaviest weight class! In polite company FFWOA stood for Florida's Finest Wrestling Officials Association. (A lot were from Florida). But it actually stood for Fat F%^& Finest Wrestling Officials Association!

To keep them grounded to the mat?  🙅‍♀️

Freestyle us all standing up. You need to get up and down a lot in folkstyle. An obese folkstyle ref just wouldn't be effective for even a typical match and wouldn't have the endurance for an all day tourney.

So let's send all the overly obese to national freestyle events.

My theory: many refs are former wrestlers who once cut a lot of weight.   When they stopped wrestling, they never stopped eating.  Oh, and it was delightful for a while ... until the extra pounds arrived as the metabolism slowed.

The problem with this theory: most of the refs don't look like former wrestlers.

Hence the need for a new theory:

New theory: many of the refs wanted to be wrestlers earlier in life.  They showed up to a few practices.  They didn't like the demanding work ethic and/or the need to "take home" the sport, which meant among other things, to live on a healthy and at times strict diet outside of practice.  So, in their later years, they became part time refs to relive their non-glory years as non-wrestlers.

The problem with this theory:  I have no empirical evidence for it; just a hunch. But WKN (Wrestleknownothing) might be able to find some statistical support for or against it.  He's a crafty man.

It's time to interview a few referees and get to the bottom of this 100 pound mystery.   FLO, Intermat, Baschamania ... are you game?

Another theory - they are all former swimmers. 🏊‍♀️

I'd call bs on that. I'm a ref. Most of us were above average wrestlers. Why? Not because it made us better refs but simply because we enjoy the sport.

I was only having some fun with the original claim of the post.  I've seen quite a few fit and even thin refs

Ok. Yah, I'd say there were "good" wrestlers on avg and in above avg shape. Nothing spectacular about the avg ref but generally solid people.

Let me ask a question here... are there a shortage of referee's: G/R, FS, FSW... as well as folkstyle?

Just wondering, that some getting into the game to get a source of additional income?

Sure you have former wrestlers continuing the game because they love the sport, but are they enough?

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I would have to think the pickings are slim in the USA. I mean what percentage of the population has even a basic understanding of freestyle wrestling? It’s probably less than 10% of the wrestling population which is a small percentage to begin with.

So, there's a shortage.

It would take a very clever and smart person to even attempt it w/o prior knowledge of the international style to attempt to become a ref.
