David Taylor's losses are 100% to National Champs.

Ben Askren is 153-1 if you get rid of his Pendleton losses FR/SO year

Retherford 125-1 without his TRFR losses to Stieber

Bo Nickal only has 1 loss to a non-champ (Nate Jackson)

Isaiah Martinez never lost to a non-champ..

Gable Steveson..

Dan Gable..

Those are a handful that came to mind.. I'm sure the list is exhaustive.

The real question would be the win/loss record of those to never win a championship. That's where wrestlers like Caliendo (so far), Tyler Caldwell, Daton Fix, etc. would be more interesting.

Expand

Parker Keckeisen 133-2 with the only non-NCAA champ losses to Truax once and Hidlay once, he avenged both of these losses 2x each.

Kharchla was ranked around #5 overall his senior year. I'll admit, I was VERY happy about him committing to the Buckeyes, I thought he was a sure-fire multiple time AA.

Injuries have derailed the careers of a lot of talented wrestlers from different schools, it happens. That's life. If Carson wants to come back for 1 more year to help the team and secure another AA, i'm all for it. Always been a fan of the kid and hope he gets 1 more shot at it and stays healthy.

I know this topic is more about Caliendo but it’s interesting to see fans perception related to Kharchla and even tOSU.

I like to apply the Iowa test here. What would wrestling fans say if Kharchla wrestled for Iowa and had the career he had? Spoiler alert people would blame the Brands. So why does Tom Ryan get a pass on this and with the state of the team in general? Their recruiting and results do not align.

Genuinely curious, I’ll hang up and listen.

because Jesse Mendez is going beast mode while the Brands are forking over millions to scrape by with other teams' wrestlers

He really is a great wrestler who just seems to not put it all together.

Idk if this is factual, because it's on Reddit, but people are saying they have sources inside the program that are saying Jaggers is running the practices Iowa "I will break you today" style, and that they're beating the hell out of everyone. People getting way too injured as a result. Would be interesting if true.

Good to be skeptical of the wrestling subreddit- absolutely awful

To be fair, he was only one match away from this happening.

But, he does seem to follow the not all that uncommon occurrence of tOSU guys finishes getting worse (7th/R12/BBQ)

I didn't read this on Redditt but this was what I heard immediately after B1G's except it was Ryan and the coaching staff. Mendez's father reportedly raised hell with Ryan. His performance was much better at The NCAA Tourney, FWIW...

oh boy... just to clarify you heard that Ryan and the coaching staff were running ridiculously hard practices and burning everyone out?

Tom Ryan lost an NCAA finalist because of his loyalty to a dude that went 0-2 at NCAAs. That is a fireable offense at a school like tOSU.

i think somebody already made the point, but i'll paraphrase it: they got 5th and had 1 champ. from outside eyes that is more than likely seen as a successful season.

and you're acting like CK wasn't a top ranked wrestler the whole year.  few people would have guessed he would have been a 2 pump chump at NCAAs.

good or bad TR is staying.

No one was even thinking CK would go 0-2 after watching CK in the PSU dual against Haines.

My question is, if Rocco wanted to go why wasn't he give the chance to wrestle off?   Ryan didn't have an issue making Cannon earn his spot over Sasso.   If Rocco is beating the guys in the room and wants to go, why try and RS him?

I didn't have him going 0-2, but I definitely didn't have him on the podium. I didn't even have him in the R12. So I'm sure there's others like me.

This is what I meant by Tom's loyalty to Kharchla. His loyalty to Kharchla (and not giving Rocco a fair chance to win the spot) cost him a national finalist. It was well known back in December Rocco was unhappy about being FORCED to RS and wanted out.

It would be awesome if he could, but clearly his knees are hoping and praying for greener pastures.

Most wrestlers I have known got sidelined by the limits of their body, not the limits of their will alone.

When *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me* breaks, there’s only so much you can do.

Obviously, tight hips and a lack of high school competition don’t help, but some dudes just get beat up.  He did a great job and AA is a huge accomplishment no matter who you are or where you come from.

He should be respected for being willing to go through to surgery recoveries in pursuit of his dream and in support of his team.  There is no off season when you are on your way back from a knee operation like that.

Ryan publicly stated that he did have a chance, but that it had to wait until December when Kharchla returned from injury.  No clue if that ever happened, if I had to guess maybe Welsh wanted to compete prior to that (CKLV?) but if he wrestled attached it would have burned his redshirt and then he would basically lose a year of eligibility if Kharchla beat him.  But as someone else said, if that happened I’m sure he could have wrestled off for 184 too.

here are my thoughts on the whole sich:

tom ryan sees a nationally ranked and former AA stud in CK.  RW has a redshirt to burn. so why force CK out?

i felt like RW got a god draw last year.  there is a chance he doesn't even AA if the bracket was actually set up correctly. but because of luck, he comes out a finalist as a true freshman.

if RW would have wrestled this year there is no way he matches or beats his last year's performance and he transfers anyways.

then you would have people saying, "they should have redshirted RW and let him mature a bit more. we already had a former AA in CK that could have got the job done. "

RW got a good draw and still needed three SV 4-1 victories to make the finals so I get your point.

Regardless of their credentials, you have to let the best guy go if they want, imo.   Look at PSU, they are actively recruiting and paying NIL over guys that have been on campus with 4 years of eligibility left.

Kharchla not making any official announcement yet makes me think he is giving next year serious consideration.
