For anyone that is interested in actual data rather than just taking that standard American talking points against Greco....

From last year's World Championship medal bouts:   Average points scored in FS: 10.16;  Avg points scored in GR: 10.91

Very interesting. I don't watch a lot of Greco, so I am surprised by this. It would be interesting to see how many of those points are TDs v. FS.

Also, passivity penalty points should not be part of that average IMO.

Would you dump greco if it meant ten MFS and ten WFS weights?

I'd dump women's wrestling. Its terribly boring to watch. They force it on us in every tournament now, sprinkling in women's with matches people actually want to see. Call it what it is. Put a circus tent up and let that clown show have their own event.

Just for 1-1 ties?   Not for 2-2 or 3-3 etc?  Seems kind of funny.

mspart

they need to get with the times and put in a dance off for the tie breaking criteria. 20 seconds each wrestler. show us your best dance moves.

I would. Greco is less skilled Wrestling...IMO, I understand others feel VERY differently about this.

Greco may be tougher...

Your opinion is gross and speaks to a lack of personal character.

LOL no it doesn't. adding women cost men a LOT. weight classes, resources, etc. let them stand on their own 2 feet and stop stealing from the men. sorry your daughter wrestled. low class for women to do it.

Fact: If there wasn’t women’s wrestling, we wouldn’t be in the Olympics at all. It’s easy to say they’ve “cost” “us” … when without women’s wrestling, the entire international sport would be crippled.

Now go back in your cave.

I feel like letting FILA run rampant with their known issues for 30+ years prior to us being dropped had as much to do with us being dropped from the Olympics as anything. When did we get dropped? When did women's wrestling get added? What kind of weak leadership did it take to allow medals to be taken in order to create medals for women? Not a troll post. Calm down.

FILA's ineptitude as a whole and their reluctance to accept women's wrestling was definitely a factor - it wasn't exactly ancient history when they were awarding "prettiest wrestler" awards and vacuum cleaners for prizes at tournaments. Women's wrestling had four weights in 2004, 2008 and 2012. The upheaval and move to six weights helped save the sport on the Olympic programme. That's documented.

I agree “dirty Greco” (foot sweeps and trips) would be worth considering to create action, but the Olympic issue is that basically turned Greco into a Judo hybrid. And the IOC likes to have distinct differences between the combat sports.  We don’t need a reason to dump one of those sports from the Olympic sports.

That's a really good point about the IOC wanting to keep sports distinct. Judo de-emphasized leg shots because the Olympic committees didn't want it to be too much like wrestling. Karate tried to focus on Kata and hand strikes to distinguish itself from Taekwondo. Grappling/BJJ would probably need to make changes to their sport, among other things, or have Judo and freestyle modify or de-emphasize takedowns, chokes, armlocks, and other aspects of their disciplines to be considered for inclusion in a future Olympics. Not that they would necessarily want to. There's a whole other discussion to be had about the way sports become watered-down due to whatever requirements are needed to be an Olympic sport vs. the benefits that the Olympics bring.

For sure. But some American folk style fans who want out of the Olympics aren't thinking through what an Olympic exit would mean. I've heard them talking about bringing the international top guys into some American pro league. What top international guys in that scenario?

Wrestling would collapse in Dagestan, it would be a new paradigm. Wrestling could be resigned to the same status as lacrosse, as imaginable as the wild success that they're predicting
