Question- can your 5 events as a true freshman include a big 10 and ncaa championship tournament and still maintain 4 years of eligibility?

No. Those tournaments automatically use a year of eligibility no matter how few dates you use.

It would seem that there are only 3 reasons not to the pull the shirt.

1. He can't beat the guy starting ahead of him. (Based upon what I've seen of them both this doesn't seem to be likely although maybe in the Iowa room things are different.)

2. He doesn't think he can beat Keck or CStar this year and would rather sit and wait till the weight class is clear and less challenging.  (Possible but these guys generally are not looking to do anything but price the are the best and can beat anyone out there. Nothing would be more awesome for a young guy to beat a 4x and 1x in route to their own championship)

3.  The coaches don't think he can beat Keck and CStar and think he doesn't give them the best chance to score more points and maybe the team national championship. (This would be my guess.  I think he definitely scores more team points than Arnold for them and is definitely a podium contender.)

Could he use more time to develop, especially in the bottom position, Absolutely, so could have Lilledahl at PSU this year but when you are the best guy at that weight in the room, give your team the best shot at a team title and getting on the podium and are hungry to be out there you convince your coaches.

They just landed Bassett and have Deluca coming in, you want to maximize your years with all 3 of those guys.

He is at best third this year, but next year he will be I would imagine one of the bigger pre-season favorites unless Barr sucks back down and even then, I think he's the favorite.

Why at best 3rd?  He could beat Starocci or Keck.

The Brands are selling getting better as a team to beat and become National Champs! They are selling things will work themselves out in the room work for your spot; you want this guy next to you in the line up next year and following. Gabe had his Red Shirt; Angelo will keep his I would think.  Tom said the right guy considering all things. The team needs Angelos 4 years of Duals and future team value. They will definitely compete, with Gabe in the post season line up, a few points below Angelo in the line up. The only thing that would change it would be if Angelo gave them an ultimatum (which I don't see) or PSU says a couple guys are definitely out to injury.

Just ask him.

Hey Angelo, what is your ceiling at NCAAs this year:

I understand why Iowa is  redshirting Ferrari as they will get more out of him over the next 4 years.

What I can't understand is why did they pay all that money for 1 year transfers, but not put out their best lineup?

Would you say no to talent that wants to wrestle for you?  Its 2 different questions; the best possible line up today or the best line up for the future of the team?

Getting 2nd instead of 3rd is worth it?

Let's not pretend that Parco, Teamer, and Buchanan all knocked on Iowa's door unsolicited.   As I said, I am not questioning the decision to sit Ferrari and do whats best long term.  I don't understand why they went out, recruited and PAID 1 year guys when they are not going to put out their best lineup.

Don't forget that Caliendo is probably getting a hefty bag too since he transferred in as well (with Franek a few years ago).

It is an interesting question. If you do not pull the shirt, Ferrari improves his chances of being a four-timer. This year he would face two real, proven hammers. Next year those two guys are gone, and his chances improve significantly.

But given the current state of NIL and the newest entrant, OSU, has spent heavily on both wrestlers and coaches, the odds he is poached away before completing the four for Iowa, goes up.

It is an uncertain present against an uncertain future. So it probably comes down to how Tom Brands and Bob Nicolls weight those two against each other.

Another uncertainty is how many recruits Angelos success/presence on the team might draw over ?3 year ?4 years

That makes sense tho. I am not questioning why Iowa is heavy in the portal or is paying guys lots of money.  Caliendo is mulit-year starter and will part of the line up next year.

I just don't get why they went and got 1 year rentals.  If this wasn't the year they were going to try and maximize points, whey didn't they try and pay highly ranked underclassman.

I mean, even if Iowa can't beat Penn State this year (I think they can if they use the lineup in my other thread), it's embarrassing to lose by 100+ points at NCAAs.

putting out Angelo would what make them lose by 92-95?

And I could impregnate Shakira. Let's stick to reality here.

This was my first thought right after the match. While it was the ideal result for Brands (won the match, but not convincingly; won the dual; rested Gabe) it also raises Angelo's NIL stock and deleverages Iowa a little bit. I was fully expecting AJ and the rest of the fam to be tweeting about getting bigger bags next season.

Fortunately, Angelo seems to love the environment at Iowa and thinks he's gaining a lot by being in the room. So who knows
