Boy Scouts discontinued

Scouting America. They are probably on their last breath and hoping for attention and some of that creative funding. Did they announce a premium newsletter?

I see two things.  

I am an Eagle Scout, all my boys are Eagle Scouts.   My brother and my dad are Eagle Scouts.   I was a scout leader for years. 

1.  Even when I was doing it back in the day, it was not the most popular thing to do.  It got less popular over time because it was associated with military training I think.   There really wasn't much of this, but it was regimented and you had to do things to get to a higher rank.  But in reality, it was not the  most popular thing to do for decades.   Few community groups did it, it was mostly religious institutions that supported it.  

2.  They decided to add girls in the 16-18 year old groups and I think that was the beginning of the end.   Pretty soon, they had girls participating from the youngest age.  It was no longer Boy Scouts for boys.   So I think the interest went out further.   Now they are tying to move further in that direction and it is not working. 

These are my observations.

I was a Boy Scout.  I enjoyed it.   I took my son to a Cub Scout meeting when he was around 7 or 8.  It felt sooooooo cultish to me.  He didn’t want to go back and I didn’t make/send him.   That was maybe 7 years ago or so.   I don’t remember it being that cultish…… it sure creeped me out.

What Boy Scouts did for the boys:

1.   A lot of it was outside, learning.   Camping, archery, rifle, hatchet throwing, snow sledding etc.  

2.  Inside stuff included citizenship studies, first aid studies, communication studies etc.

3.   There was a path of progression.     You knew how to progress.

4.   There was leadership training.   So the boys that were leaders learned valuable skills.   The idea was to rotate so all the boys could gain these skills.  

A good organization when done right.   All of these things are good things.

We lived 14 miles out of town, didn't have the opportunity but did get to work long hours outside as well as fishing & hunting.
