If wrestling moved to a spring-only sport then I could see potential momentum for an individual followed by team champs. The hang-up is that any A-list college wrestler that would drive fan participation would likely be sitting out because they are wrestling at the US Open/Last Chance/OTT. But the real hang-up is that the NCAA season is a grind no matter when it starts because the finish is brutal - the physical toll, the weight cutting, the academics, the lack of social life, all of it... and that includes room guys/backups because as @Caveira mentioned most everyone would bump a weight after the grind.

i am an idiot on the internet

A lot of states do Team States then Individual States the following weekend.  Do the same thing.

I’m all for keeping the NCCAs tournament as it is, but to keep College wrestling growing we need duals, especially like the one coming November 15 and 16 in Tulsa, 16 teams that are all paid $20,000 to come and the top 8 receive bonus money, as a fan I wouldn’t mine paying more on the ticket side to keep wrestling growing

Did you read my original post? The individual tournament stays the same and serves as a qualifier to compete in a dual tournament for the national title.

Yes, and in theory it's fine.  It just doesn't seem like reality for a combat sport like wrestling vs a country club sport like golf.  Coaches don't want to hold a dual tournament January, they are not signing off on a dual tournament a week or so after NCAAs.

I like the idea of holding a National Duals before NCAAs.  How would it be formatted, two days, eight team, four duals first day, two the next morning, with the championship that evening?  One weekend doesn’t seem too disruptive and duals are so much easier to watch than tournaments.

I just posted this deep on another thread, but I thought it was worth it's own.

When it comes to giving out a national title in an individual sport, golf actually does it right.

"All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket thereafter."

In wrestling terms, this would be having the NCAA championships to crown the individual national champions at each weight. Then you would take the top 8 scoring teams, and have them face in a bracketed dual tournament for the team title.

How anyone could be against this format is absolutely insane to me. It would be awesome watching teams trying to qualify for the team tournament for the first time, or jockeying for seeding position. Imagine a weekend where on Friday you have four duals to watch, Saturday night you have the two semi-finals, and then on Sunday a two hour dual for the national title.

Horrible idea and just stupid

Golf is a sport?  It involves skill, absolutely.  And hand-eye coordination, and even certain forms of strength in driving the ball. But an athletic event, probably not.   I don't think it rises to that level.

Perhaps it is a "skort", a skill-ish sort of sport.   A game, yes.

It's more like billiards or bowling than it is wrestling, track and field, tennis soccer, gymnastics, and the like.
