Buckeyes Host Japanese Stars

The Buckeyes are tapping into the wisdom of Japanese World and Olympic coaches and wrestlers while hosting members of their national team. Ryan said having high-octane partners such as 2021 Olympic gold medalist, Takuto Otoguro, World silver medalist Yoshinosuke Aoyagi, 2024 Olympic silver medalist Daichi Takatani, 2024 Olympic team member Hayato Ishiguro, along with their coach, Shogo Maeda, has proven invaluable for his staff and wrestlers.

“Coleman Scott is friends with their coach,” Ryan said. “He was able to organize bringing them here. When you get Olympic champions and World medalists added to your room, and the international perspective of what they think and do in certain positions, it’s incredible for our guys.”

Ryan said he looks for opportunities to learn and to put his team under different forms of wrestling stress.

“We look for different ways of putting the guys through duress,” he said. “This experience does that. It’s like, ‘You think your single-leg attacks or your defense are good? Well, go with this guy. It’s not as good as you thought, is it?’”

The Japanese coaches and wrestlers will be training with the Buckeyes and their Regional Training Center athletes for two weeks.

“You’re always trying to find ways to learn, to expose and poke holes in the wrestling packages of your student-athletes,” Ryan said. “You have to if you want to constantly improve. Because of how incredibly skilled they are, these guys do that.

“It’s been an incredible experience. They’re great guys. They’re humble. They work incredibly hard, and we’re so fortunate to get to have them here.”

OSU's perceived decline also has to do with how they were wrestling. Defensive, close matches, "chess match" somebody called it, low output, predictable strategies,

It's a shame that Fix did not get coached by the current staff.

Another timeline not mentioned is that when Scott left UNC for an assistant job at Ok State David Taylor was not anywhere on the coaching candidate radar. Taylor's loss at the Olympic trials set the wheels in motion for a gold mine for Ok State and Taylor. The Ok State megadonors made sure the Cowboys didn't miss this opportunity.

Probably not mentioned because it's the most well known circumstance regarding DT and OKST...

It should be the most well known circumstance regarding Coleman Scott and OKST.

If Taylor wins the Trials, then Scott is probably the HC. "Probably" because they hired Smith when we was still competing.

I don’t know if we know this.  Maybe they go after Burroughs or Dake or something

This seems a bit premature.  Of course Fix still has some prime years left to see if he improves on the international scene.

Fix has three years left to be the man leading the team. He is a 61 tweener at this stage of his career and will be 30 years old by the time the next OTT rolls around. He's not going to be effective at 57 or 65 at that stage of life without some garage water so he's left hoping Vito calls it quits soon + Spencer doesn't bump up for some cadets payback. And honestly Vito and Fix will very likely be looking over their shoulders within a couple years if Lilledahl takes The Leap and outgrows 57/125.

i am an idiot on the internet

Sounds like Coleman is adding a lot of value to the Ohio State RTC.  I'm glad they're getting some return on that investment, and I'm guessing Ryan went out on a limb to find a way to make that happen.

Honestly, it was tough seeing Coleman uprooting his family and leaving his UNC position for Stillwater, only to get passed over for the HC job he was auditioning for -- and right at a time when hiring season's over for coaches.

Seems like he's landed on his feet, with the RTC part-time gig and starting up some camps back in Stillwater. Not sure how long it'll last though, as you gotta think he's the first person ADs will call when coaching positions start to open up after NCAAs.

Scott talks pretty in-depth about the OSU ordeal and its aftermath on the new Mike Mal podcast. My guess is that, at least at present, he wants very little to do with college wrestling.  He looks like a very good guy, and I hope his new venture in Stillwater is awesome.

As in he's all in with the RTC?

Pretty cool to see he brought the Japanese team to work with the bucks.
