Thanks to everyone that has chimed in.  I enjoy reading your perspectives.

I too have thought about how nice it would be to have a "lighter weight" coach in the room, and Waters would be a good one.

There is just something about the "eye test" of watching the Mizzou duals, that something is missing with this team.  Watch the dual replays and notice the lack of fire in the coaches sitting on the side, or even the other Tigers on the team bench/area.  Just seems like zero emotion to me.  And a little fire might help in those "close" matches the Tigers are losing.

And I've stated it before, some of the Tigers just continue to do the same things over and over, losing close matches (Edmond now, Jacques past) and there doesn't seem to be any constructive corrective coaching to improve the strategy or technique.  That's the kind of things I look for when grading the success of a coaching staff.

When I coached, if I worked directly with a wrestler to make adjustments, do reps, etc... and then they continued to make the same choices on the mat, they found the bench until the "light turned on!"

Call it tough love.

Filling in some context on Mizz performance last year:

In the 33 seed era (5 years) the:

  • #12 seed goes 0-2 8% of the time and AA's 18% of the time (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #15 seed goes 0-2 16% of the time and AA's 12% of the time (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #22 seed goes 0-2 36% of the time and has never AA'd (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #30 seed goes 0-2 80% of the time and has never AA'd (most common outcome is 0-2)

Zero wins sucks, but two or three wins is about what you expect from that group of seeds. Four is cause for celebration.

How have #33 seeds done?

Anecdotally, I remember Wyatt Sheets was a 33rd seeded AA

Wyatt Sheets is one of one.

As a result #33 seeds have gone 0-2 77% of the time (still better than 82% for #32 seeds) and AA'd 2% of the time.

Well and Wyatt wasn't the original 33 seed.  He didn't qualify.  Someone was injured and pulled out and he was next man up.  So more like #34.
