I think the rule changed in 2019-2020.  You use to have to mis most of two seasons to get the 6th year.  They almost never give them out to the point that they were rarely even applied for.  I think Eric Bradley was denied under the old rules.

I think you're right that it now is a routine part of the medical hardship since the rule change.  The criteria is participation in no more than 30% of competitions and the injury happens in the first half of the season.  The Cornell dual was their 8th competition date of the year and there are 16 on Lehigh's schedule so it was in the first half, but if it happened this week maybe not.

I guess the only thing that could really hang it up is if he gets medically cleared to compete before the end of the season, which he might.  Finding a doctor to not clear him/having Crookham say things that would prevent the doctor from clearing him is probably trivial.

Several wrestlers have received 6th year waivers in recent years Michael Kemerer, Boo Lewallen, Austin Gomez and Anthony Cassar to name a few, but before 2019 there aren't many.  I think Noah Surtin is out for the year and would need a 6th year.  Nagao if he out for the year would be in the same boat, but since he's not starting even if it weren't guaranteed the decision would be different than Crookham's.

I think the situation is fluid. As the NCAA accrues loses in the courts they are hesitant to enforce any of their rules that affect eligibility. They are also more inclined than ever to grant additional eligibility. For that reason, I hesitate to rely on precedence when trying to figure out what the NCAA will do now, other than to say they are far more likely to grant extra years now than at any time in the past, even the very recent past - like last year.

Apparently it was stated on the Iowa/Illinois broadcast that Crookham was out for the year

It was stated in the tOSU vs Rutgers dual, and I heard it again last night on the broadcast. There isn't any new information. The last thing that came out from Lehigh is still that they hope to get him back this season.

If he is done for the year, we have 1 not so crazy favorite and 2 guys I would have never even thought about going to the year in my opinion. Those guys being Drake Ayala, Tyler knox, Zeth Romney. If any of those 3 did not AA I would also not be overly shocked, but I think given body of work, they have to be the favorites without Crookham.

edit: You could throw in Byrd, I did not because I do not like how many close matches he has. I think it's hard to win a weight at NCAA's when every match you wrestle with within the margins.

I think you still have to include Byrd, Bouzakis and Frost in this group, considering Knox has lost to both Bouzakis and Frost.  Frost’s only losses are to Ayala and Romney.  Byrd beat Bouzakis and only loss is to Ayala.  Bouzakis has 3 losses to the field (+1 to Davino) but they are to Romney, Byrd and Shawver.    But I probably draw the line before Shawver who has worse losses

I think it could very much come down to draws. Knox feels like he is always going to be a bad matchup for Ayala because Ayala finishes pretty methodically which plays into Knox's scrambling and Knox is not really going to pressure into him for the slide bye. On the other hand you have Bouzakis who I think can beat both guys his power will be an issue for both and it feels like hes a lock for a reversal at least against Knox maybe not Ayala. Shawyver and Byrd are so baseline though and pick there spots really well which seems to be the recipe to beat nick essentially letting him beat himself. When Shawyver is at his best I think he be the best guy at the weight but then you have the Davis and noto losses which have not aged well. The real wild card is if Nasir Bailey regains last season form or if hes hurt/the cut is draining him. I will have to see some more of him against higher level comp but Braxton Brown is killing people this year outside of Romney.
