For you non twitter users, Austin DeSanto wrestled Greco today! He went 1-1, as far as I know, I am still trying to catch up with the results and will update this thread!

Greco allows more headbutts, so he has that going for him.

Desanto finished the day 2-1 and got a bronze, thankfully this tournament guaranteed two matches per athlete. Typical format he would have been 0-1. Bounced back to win 2 consecutive, the competition didn't appear to be too fierce in all honesty. He is back in action next week in Finland!

LOSS William Ekeroth (SWE) 6-2 - Cannot find info on him.
WON Algot Gamelius (SWE) 11-3, TF - 1-1 at 2023 u20 European Championship
WON Ruslan Stamat (SWE) 10-2, TF - Cannot find info on him.

I can see this oddly working out for him. He’s stubborn as an ox and has a gorilla grip.  Free and folkstyle might just have been too gentle for him.

He has a lot of things that one requires to be good at greco but hes trained for 20 years to keep his hips back I just don't know that you can make up that kind of time just being naturally gifted at something at least when hoping to reach the highest of levels. This could also just be his attempt to get more matches and force himself to work his par tear more which makes sense.

He needs a shallower talent pool, and he also needs wrestling. I wish more senior free guys had such clarity.

I think he could do well in greco. Working with Warren is a good idea. Hall or Paulson would be good too.

The Olympic weight being 60kg is also a big deal.

If I didn't know that was a greco match I would have thought it was free. Glad he is taking the opportunity to stay on the international mat though.

Yes, I think this is a great move for DeSanto.   He will not be our rep in free I don't think.   He is pretty good and this might be a great way to get on a World Team.   I think he can do it with the right amount of work and dedication.

Agreed. I do not agree with Coach Haight that it takes years to learn the hand fighting and positioning needed at the elite GR level. What we need are better athletes in the elite GR system - period.

How is Greco on the knees? Someone I know who knows someone who says they know things said that DeSanto wasn't getting the same leg drive post surgery and was still bothered by pain.

Footwork is vital in GR, but you typically don't need the deep penetration steps of a leg attack. I was comfortably able to wrestle GR without an ACL in my left knee post-college. Hopefully DeSanto finds similar good health.
