The consensus in the podium poll is that Ohio State will be on it.

But when I look at the ranking services (Intermat, Flo, Wrestlestat) there is anything but consensus. Ohio State is probably the team with the least amount of agreement.

Bouzakis at 133 (High to Low Diff of 6), Gallagher at 157 (HLD 8), Kharchla at 174 (HLD 6), Geog at 197 (HLD 10), and especially Sasso at 165 (HLD 9) have some pretty wide ranges of opinion. For Sasso the difference in expected point scoring potential between 2/3 and 11 is something like 9-12 points.

Flo and Wrestlestat's rankings seem high on Sasso given all that has happened. Geog had a rough end to last year and already has a lose this year, so who knows. And with Kharchla yet to wrestle after coming off injury he is another who knows.

To me Ohio State is the most intriguing team this year.

Thanks for sharing those stats, I didn't know vast all the rankings were.

I'd like to see Gallagher and Sasso get back into form after missing all or most of last season due to injury. Same goes for Kharchla as I type this.

Hoping Rogotzke and Geog cleaned some stuff up this year. I think if Welsh is at 184 Ohio St has a very good shot at a 3rd/4th place finish. Cliff keen next month should be very telling.

Cornell:  hold my beer.

Flo Intermat WSt

125: Greg D. 10  9  5

133: Ungar 18 20  16

141: Cornella 15 17  20

149: Fernandez 32 14  18 (!)

157: Shapiro 2 2  1

165: Ramirez 7 4  4

174: Ruiz 11 14  52 (really throws things off)

184: Foca 15 8  7

197: Mike D. 26 25  24

285: Davis NR NR  NR 40

That sums to a HLD of 82, not counting the infinity for Davis, with only two guys (Shapiro and Ramirez) whose HLD is less than 5.  Compare to 51 for tOSU, which has five guys whose HLD is less than 5.

I wouldn't say hold my beer, necessarily, but I would put them second. From a points perspective Their high low range is about 16, whereas OSU's is about 23.

But given how Cornell outperformed their seeds last year, you cannot discount them for the podium even though the rankings have them in the five (Wrestlestat) to nine slot (Flo).

We get

McCrone, Bouzakis, Mendez, D Emilio, Paddy, Sasso/Hepner, Kharch, Rogotzke, Geog, Feldman.

Tough to podium in my estimation...

With three of the wrestlers coming off of injuries it is going to be an uphill climb. The coaching staff has their work cut out for them. Getting healthy and staying healthy will be a key factor for the Buckeyes this year.

I'm a little surprised with Paddy's ranking, wasn't he ranked like #25 / unranked his last year wrestling? Has he jumped levels after having a significant injury? I'd love to see him jump levels and live up to his recruiting ranking, but a little baffled how he made the rankings jump.

As high as #12, as low as #16 pre-injury per Intermat. Wrestlestat started him in the teens, then had him in the 20's late in the year (around the time he was injured).

9/27/2023   16 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

11/28/2023  16 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

12/4/2023   13 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

12/27/2023 12 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

1/3/2024     12 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

1/9/2024     16 Paddy Gallagher Ohio State

As a Buckeye fan, I have zero expectation of being on the podium. How many AAs would Ohio State need to be top 3?

I would say 5 with some of the other wrestlers making the round of 12. It would definitely have to be a good tournament for them. The coaching staff has their work cut out for them. This is to be top 4 and on the podium.

You can generally get third or fourth (on the podium) with 4 AAs if there are at least 1 champ or 2 in the second and third range. Absent that you probably need 5.

We are going to need 5 AAs and have others contribute. Lots of work to do.

So he was injured when he dropped lower in the rankings then. Makes sense. I'm wishing him all the luck this year!

Ohio guy here...take it with a grain of salt but here are the popular opinions and rumors in Ohio....

Brandon Cannon will be competing to take Paddy's spot. Rumor has it Shumate is dropping to 184 for the starting spot. Not sure the rules but Rogotzke has a RS to use and he should as the consensus is that Ryan going all in for next year.

Welsh is already stated he is RS this year.

Interesting if it has been rumored ahead of Tom Ryan's statement.

Cannon went 141 last year and is listed at 149 on the roster. I wonder if 157 is his optimal weight. @The Inside Trip Any rumors about Sasso moving down to 157?

@TNwrestling well, it was before he confirmed it.

@juniorvarsity I've not heard anything, I think many folks are just thrilled he is even back on the mats competing at this level.

Sounds like Feldman was a little dinged up for the all-star match and it definitely showed. Coaches were just as surprised at the result as the rest of us it sounds. We'll see if he can pick off where he ended last year, but after Gable's TF of Ghadiali, sounds like it'll be a battle for second.

wrestlestat rankings came out and Gable Steveson dropped to fifth behind Kerkvliet, Hendricksen, Bastida, and Feldman.

His two tech falls apparently cost him over 100 Elo points.
