fair enough, but in the sense that you'd say 2/3 will out place their highest placement so far?

I think I meant something more along the lines of "bashing iowa is so trendy right now that its hard to associate it with the mild amount of courage it takes to register a hot take"

2/3 to go higher wouldn't be a good take even if they were expected to improve as wrestlers.

I think Buchanan and Parco could, but I don't think Teemer wins it.  Even if odds for Buchanan and Parco were 50/50 to both improve, I am not sure I would take 1/3 still - gun to head.  There are quite a few guys at all three of their weights that can (and have) beaten them and have youth on their side.

Not saying 2/3 will out place their highest placement does not mean I bash them. So why bother?

I didn't mean that you did, I was referencing my claim that someone saying the tranfers won't outplace themselves is hardly a "hot take".

But as @Spencerlee pointed out, it is a hot take. DeSanto, Eierman, Lugo, Caliendo, Woods all place higher upon transferring to Iowa. So saying the transfers will place lower is the opposite of recent experience, aka a hot take.

"a piece of commentary, typically produced quickly in response to a recent event, whose primary purpose is to attract attention." not sure that fits either of out definitions but I'm sure you're not anxious to hash out a definition.

That exactly fits what the OP posted. He commented on Iowa's recent success in landing big name transfers in a way that he calculated would attract attention. And he was successful.

but I thought the only notable thing about the comment was that it was contemptibly banal, defying the google definition.

But when Rahma sat down with Harris for the interview, she shared a different hot take, declaring that "bacon is a spice." Rahma and other observant Muslims do not eat pork in adherence with their faith.

who knew?

There is a perfect place for this. And it is not here.

Its on topic, this is the hot takes thread.  We don't have a bacon thread.   🙂

It is the hot take sub thread of the college wrestling thread. But then you knew, and ignored, that.

What's your take on Drew Davis?  If he wrestles Attasauov later this season, who wins?  Is Davis a freshman phenom or was Attasauov just pulling too much weight?

I'm going to say both are true. He's not a Spencer Lee phenom or a Richie Figs phenom, but he was a two-time IHSA State Champ, and he was very composed in that match. Very, very composed for a true Freshman in his first match against the big state school. I've seen him wrestle multiple times during high school, and I knew he was good, just not that good yet.

As for Ramazan, he was wobbly a couple of times in the first period. In the third period, the takedown was too easy for Davis. Attasauov was too shaky in the third. I think the Russian is going to be great, but he needs to acclimate. I've watched a lot of video on him. Seen him be strong in SV (up at 133), so I think it'll just take time. I lost 30+ pounds my Junior year in high school and was still cutting when the first wrestle-off of the season came along. A Sophomore treated me like a sack of potatoes, and so I didn't get to wrestle in that first dual of the season. I get it.

not if he won the wrestle off...Arnold is known for missing weight also.

I was not aware of a wrestle off. Did I miss that? Also, I don't follow high school wrestlers until they commit, so I don't know about missing weight stuff.

I feel a type of way about these 6th and 7th hear guys.

According to Arnold's dad there was no wrestle off and Arnold has been working hard to bulk up to 184. So sounds like this was the plan all along.

I would have assumed this was the route for Arnold, regardless of if Brands were to have come back or not.

Arnold has Senior MFS aspirations and the Olympic weight is 86 KG (~189.6lbs), which much better alligns itself to 184lbs than it does 174lbs.

I also thought for sure PK would be inserting himself in to this conversation - and he may very well still.

This now tells me that Mini-Focus is either going to... focus... on heading up to 197lbs, or keep it slim and stay near 174lbs for next season.

EDIT: Of note, PK, Brands, and Arnold all weighed in over 174lbs and under 184lbs for their Alpha Certification, whereas Focus weighed in over 184lbs and under 197lbs.  It is a Redshirt year, so there might not be anything there.  Interesting that his oldest brother's biggest competition is his training partner, though.

From his Hawkeye Beacon post:

"
- My kid is wrestling the weight I think he should be wrestling this weekend. I don't question it, and I never will. It's not my place to. I trust Tom with everything, otherwise my family and I would not even be here.
- I think it's where he belongs because none of you can really appreciate how much this kid has been beefing up. Can he get back to 174? Of course, and if that is where he is called to go, he will answer the call, and there will not be a complaint from him or me.
- I've raised my son to always trust the process. I cannot tell you how many fools have reached out to ask if Gabe would ever transfer. After a few chose words, and also using sign language they got the picture.
- I had a call from a dear friend yesterday calling me to tell me to keep my head up. I said, "why"? Well because Gabe lost his wrestle-off. I literally busted out laughing. Not because there never was one, but because he thought I needed encouragement. This is wrestling and if and when there is a wrestle-off, someone will lose. But my feelings, nor my kid's will be hurt. #itsjustwrestling."

I was aware of that post, to be clear.  I don't only peruse this BBS.

I do thank you for posting for others to see, though.

Also, I did edit my initial post.  Just a tidbit of 'neat' information.

I had heard there was but checked with more reliable sources and there was no wrestle off.
