I believe Campbell University has decided not to allow scholarship athletes to compete in the hope that they will leave, thereby forfeiting the money and saving the school funds right away.  It is brutal, cruel and unfortunately, effective.

But they’re all in school now right?  And they can’t transfer to another school until next semester.  I imagine several will take them up on the offer for first semester, so at best they only save on one semester.

Looks like half year of tuition is $20K.   So if they all don’t wrestle first semester, at most they’re saving $140K, for a lot of negative opinions.

But that’s also not counting if any of the scholarship guys were considering hanging it up anyway, or if any have redshirts available (although maybe they won’t be able to practice either, but I guess this is where the RTC being “separate” comes in handy).

It was a shrewd and shitty move by the AD.

Wrestler keeps the scholarship: they don't get to compete, wrestling program languishes and dies, AD can say it's not her fault that the program can't attract talent.

Wrestler doesn't keep the scholarship: they get to compete, but wrester has to support himself out of pocket or through outside funds (NIL, grants, third party scholarships, etc.) but either way the school makes a buck.

And both options increases the odds of wrestlers transferring, which works in the AD's favor. Hopefully Sentes can keep his guys out of the portal until they get this figured out.

TBH, if I’m Sentes I’m probably encouraging scholarship guys to go in the portal.  I wouldn’t want to be suggesting they lose out on free tuition money.   Then if guys do transfer it makes it easier to decide who gets the remaining scholarships

Scholarship athletes need to sue fast.

Being given a Scholarship for their sport and then being told "you can't participate" is dishonest as hell.

Surely a good Attorney can nail the school for deception like this.

The school trying to drop wrestling when they have the greatest looking wrestling mat around" is asinine.

I don't see Title IX compliance issues mentioned as a factor here, but it sure sounds like Title IX to me.  Why else would they say that wrestlers who wish to keep their scholarships would not be allowed to compete?  That tells me it isn't just a funding issue as they are OK with spending the money on the scholarships -- but if they do, it just can't be characterized as an athletic scholarship.  Given the default Title IX requirement (as interpreted by the Dept of Ed) that male/female athletic scholarships need to be proportional to male/female enrollment, it sound to me like they're trying to revamp the teams to make the schollies more proportional.

It is not Title 9 issues. Everyone better draw the line here. Olympic sports will begun to be eliminated at D1 Universities if they opt in to revenue sharing. Not just wrestling. Example gymnastics at Ohio just had all  their scholarships pulled. It's time to fight for our sport. Don't wait until it's too late

Facts say otherwise on attendance. Based on your post history, you don’t seem to like wrestling very much. I hope you find joy in another sport.

They overshadow other sports at Campbell. The football team comes in mass to support them. They out draw the basketball team. The AD has been chipping away at Olympic sports. Making them raise money and giving it to basketball. They have events for basketball and lose money.

Campbell was down to 8 scholarships and had to raise a 100,000 for the AD. That is being reduced to 3 scholarships. The team currently has 45 wrestlers on the roster. They have had up to 55. So 37 wrestlers pay tuition, room, and board. This means the wrestling team brings students and 2.2 million to Campbell or more each year. Campbell should not opt into revenue sharing which will also cap rosters. Maximize rosters of every Olympic sport. They say enrollments down. Allow these sports to help save Campbell. If they opt in to revenue sharing its the kiss of death. It's a business decision. The athletes want to compete in Division 1 sports, at a school with great academics, in a conservative Christian environment. Without Olympic sports those students are gone.

Campbell, Where is the plan? What can the community do? Where is the AD? Why could the AD not effectively protect their best program?

@VakAttack as our resident IANAL how is this possible, especially in the current landscape of all things NCAA, to prohibit a student with an athletic scholarship from competing in said sport? This screams lawsuit from every corner back in the before-times and most certainly now. Is this the hill the Campbell AD wants to die on?

i am an idiot on the internet

lmao and people thought letting athletes get paid was a good thing. This is the end result. College programs will drop every men's sport besides football & basketball. The women's side will be basketball, volleyball, and whatever keeps them compliant with title 9.

We're so obsessed with watching college football, we are going to destroy every other sport besides basketball. Hope it was worth it.

*At the water cooler on Monday* "Damn Bob that's a real shame the alma mater just cut 15 men's sports. Anyway, did you catch the Iron Bowl!?!? Can't believe that Alabama wide receiver is only 17!!"

It's a budget shortfall problem for the most part. CU was budgeting for enrollment growth, instead they have had enrollment declines for the past few years. A lot of capital expenditures for new buildings expecting growth that did not happen. It has been said the goal is to SOMEDAY more fully fund wrestling, but that is not possible at this time. A group of passionate people are working hard to raise funds to keep Campbell competitive at rollhumps.org. Donating and spreading the word is all that can be done for now. Campbell will have everyone wrestling this year as these cuts do not take effect until the 25-26 season. Roll Humps!

I was under the impression that CU the school was doing all right relative to CU athletics, which is a separate entity. It seemed like the college has been mitigating its enrollment deficit with record transfer admissions. Did the athletics spend or set aside funds for new athletics facilities? I appreciate you giving us the inside scoop there.
