Did some rearrangement and some trimming down, set up shop on back porch (lanai in Florida talk).  Roll down shutters I spoke of will come down Just behind these units, on each side of the vertical blocks. There’s a couch and patio table in this area you can’t see in the picture, and with the shutters down it just gives us more “indoor” space. Compared to Ian, I’m better on supplies and a 1 year old roof compared to an 18 year old roof. One big piece missing but nothing I can do about that. Speakers will be charged and we’ll be ready for da riddems.

As I’ve led to before, I work in this community and if it does land anywhere in the current cone, particularly anywhere Tampa or south, the south end of our community and up the river, plus our barrier islands, are going to take a serious hit. Hoping it’s just one of those that gets much weaker on approach than expected, although the opposite is what has been happening in recent history.  Can’t hope it tips north of current tracks because those folks have taken a beating the last couple years.  Buckle up friends it’s going to be a ride IMG_4049.thumb.jpeg.058a115a1d1dbae7036d3090f2a91292.jpeg

Milton just upgraded to a cat 4. This going to be a rough one. Be safe. Do you have a generator?

So here’s the interesting scenario…they’ve been saying, and still saying, it’s going to drop on approach. And okay that’s great.  But that theme started when they thought it was going to top out 125–140.  So if it tops out at say….175….what does it slow down to??

173mph. This hurricane better slow down. No one needs 150 mph winds. You will get hit twice. Coming and going out. My daughter in SC had a small generator they used for lights and frig but they also let 2 neighbors use power for their light's and refrigerators. They were out of power for 6 days.

It looks like you are going to get a direct hit where you live.

The 5:00 had it at 180 and 905.  Still saying drop to cat 3 by landfall. Not much change in the cone. My kids are going to head out with their Mom and stay in Miami.  Going to be flying it solo!

You seem pretty relaxed, I don't know if I would be.   I've never been in a hurricane.   WE came close when we lived in Hawaii.  A storm bigger than thee whole state was coming and then it fizzled.  I don't think they have had anything bad since Iniki which killed Kauai.   That happened a few years before we got there.  But I was nervous about this one but didn't have to love through it.   I just hope the best for you and your family.

I have a co-worker that lives in Tampa and he doesn't seem too concerned.  I just hope it downgrades quickly and a lot for all of y'alls sakes!!

I feel pretty good where I’m at. Pretty well elevated and house seems pretty strong. I prepped for a week without power with three more people (18-24 years old) here than what is now going to be here, so I’m stocked to the gills.

Dude.

I'm pulling for you.

Bastardi said today that this will be the worst hurricane to hit Fla. since 1921, and will be worse than that one.  Tampa is still the target, and could easily see 15-20’ surge and waves on top of that.  It’s still going to be a hurricane when it gets to the Atlantic coast.  My advice would be leave now and take your generator with you.

Good luck, WR.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

There's talk in the scientific community about the need for a Category 6 hurricane scale with winds > 185 mph.

Let's be clear about what a Cat 5 is.

Quote

Category Five Hurricane

Winds 157 mph or higher (137 kt or higher or 252 km/hr or higher). Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months. The Keys Hurricane of 1935 and Andrew of 1992 made landfall in South Florida as Category Five hurricanes.
