I am with you. His advantage was huge and that is why he could not wrestle internationally. Too much of an advantage. I respect the man for being able to do what he did with only on leg, but he definitely had an advantage in my opinion.

It was a terrible movie and it was especially terrible if you wanted to know what happened in regards to the true story - like often happens in Hollywood they decided to spin a tale that was far removed from what actually happened.  Mark Schultz was done competing (in FS Wrestling) in 1988 - the murder happened in 1996.  For most of the early 1990s Mark was living in Utah coaching at BYU - that's pretty far removed from Foxcatcher - watching the movie you sure don't get that impression.  If you are interested in what actually happened watch one of the documentaries - Mark Schultz had very little involvement with DuPont from 1988 on.

Isn't that what happened in the movie? IIRC they showed Mark packing it up and leaving Foxcatcher Farm, then DuPont murders Dave a few scenes later. The film definitely takes some creative liberties, but Mark was also a script & story consultant.

I'm not sure what that person is talking about.  However, I do seem to remember that the "leg clinch" at that time was going to complicate things for him, and wondered how they would apply it to Robles.

If I remember, he sold his story.  Got paid.  Then wasn't happy with the "creative liberties."

The movie is generally considered to be excellent.  It was critically acclaimed and received five Academy Award nominations.  The movie is not my cup of tea, however.  I watched it once, and wouldn't care to watch it again.

BTW I was granted an audition to be an extra, but it was very last minute and I couldn't make it work with my schedule.

Basically make it or the actors in it eligible for any of the film award the movie has to be at least shown in a certain number of theaters on a limited release.  Then they can put it out on Prime.  It’s showing in Indianapolis this Saturday as part of a Film Festival.

Yes I went and saw it in Tempe this past weekend. It was enjoyable but not a great movie. Too much J lo, too much adhd cam during matches. They needlessly changed a bunch of thing i beleive they had no business changing. But I live here and wrestled a year behind Anthony so unless you are an ASU fan you probably will only notice 1 or 2 of the changes. 

 

In my opinion they took a unique and interesting story and tried to turn it into every other sports movie ever.

Wasnt enough of it, a lot of unneccesary grunting and grimmacing type stuff, they did a good job of representing Anthonys style where he locks on your wrist with his iron grip in neutral, his takedowns and his tilts.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until it’s on Amazon Prime.  Kinda sounds like one of the last wrestling movies to hit Amazon Prime, the Last Champion, which was OK but IIRC very typical sports movie.

It hard to beat the two best wrestling movies of all time

Vision quest with the best characters: Karla, Kuch, and Shute

Win Win with the best wrestling scenes and the best one liner: "Whatever the ***duck** it takes."

Did enjoy Foxcatcher, no mater how depressing. 

Still looking forward to watching Unstoppable, even though the trailers looked a bit cheesy and it sounds like the wrestling is not great (although you could say that about Vision Quest).

I saw it last weekend. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. It didn't exactly fit the narrative of how things went, and there was a "Rudy" moment that never happened. But overall it was pretty good.

Completely agree. He has many disadvantages in life, but he had many advantages on the mat as stated by Chigachanuk says,. Also, he could not move to senior level because a wrestler in FS cannot sit on his knee.

Maybe a little picky, but this was probably a fair review.  Good, but not great.  However for me that might still put it as my second favorite wrestling movie, far behind Win/Win but ahead of Foxcatcher and Vision Quest IMO.

The wrestling scenes were OK. They did do a bunch of weird zooming into their hands and stuff. Maybe it was because they used Robles for some of the wrestling scenes, but I thought the guy that played him may have been the best non-wrestler that I’ve seen in a movie. There was a Q&A after it was over and he said he trained five days a week two hours a day for seven months with Robles.  I know they said some actual D1 wrestlers were used as extras, but I didn’t recognize any.

I don’t really recall Charles, so I don’t know how accurately Cheadle portrayed him.  My biggest complaint was the guy that played Tom Brands. I know Brands is one of a kind lol, but that guy wasn’t even close to an accurate portrayal.

Yes it was similar to a lot of cliche sports movies, but at least it was mostly a true story.  I am also not super familiar with the specifics so not quite sure what was changed.   I honestly didn’t remember that they announced ASU as being cut.  Although the movie makes it seem like that caused the team to miss a season when I don’t believe it did.  They also ripped off a scene from Rudy which if I had to guess didn’t actually happen (and IIRC didn’t even really happen in Rudy).

Overall definitely worth the free tickets though!  My wife even said she liked it even though she says she “doesn’t like JLo.” They even gave out free popcorn and drinks, might have to check out more of these Amazon screenings…
