I heard (maybe wrongly) that qualified wrestlers have until March 25th to declare their intention to compete at Olympic Trials.    Is that correct?

If so, the Last Chance Qualifier isn't until something like April 6th and 7th.   Is there an accessible registration list for it.   Perhaps we might see a bunch of guys come out of the closet, so to speak, for it: IMAR, Cenzo, etc.

I'm looking forward to learning at what weight some of the "tweeners" (e.g., Retherford)  might go.

People need to quit saying Imar unless they plan to see him at 97 and no one wants to see a 97kg Imar stuffed into a singlet...

It's a bit  of a strange stretch that 2018 and 2019 World Team members (in addition to 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 World Team members)) automatically qualify for 2024 Olympic Trials.   2018 was 6 long years ago for folks like Colon, Garrett, and Steiber (who should have to re-qualify if they want to compete ... and in the case of two of them, they likely do not).

Hmm.  I wonder if Dan Gable is still qualified

I understand the idea of being inclusive but if you want to field the best team, then U23 medalists (and not just U23 World champions) should also qualify and maybe even U20 medalists (not just champions).  Both are international competitions unlike, say, Senior Nationals and could be more indicative of international success.

Perhaps they should also include runner-ups and even 3rd place finishers at NCAAs.   Yes, it's folkstyle not freestyle, but an increasing percentage of college and high school guys (and gals) compete in freestyle, and folkstyle is slowing moving toward some of the more freestyle rules.

My 2 1/2 cents

I don't know his current plans but I doubt we see him competitive again and that's a shame.  I felt Imar would have broken through if he would have stayed in it but he had some life changes and that's the way it goes sometimes.  His 2019 Final X series with JB was phenomenal.

Not to make this an IMAR thread. But I don't think he would've ever had enough to be consistently effective on the world stage. From gas tank issues, to being kind of one dimensional. His approach gave Americans a lot of issues but I don't think it was going to translate. Just another Nick Marable, better than I'll ever be, but had a ceiling.

In all seriousness, Imar stepped away because he tore his shoulder out twice. That's a competitive career death sentence for pretty much everyone.

My shoulder has been "tweaked" for years. Every-time I roll with HS kids, its just a matter of time before it goes "Screw you" and I'm useless.
Can't imagine having that feeling when you have immense talent and are striving towards something meaningful.
Unspectular end of a spectacular rassler

I thought IMar said earlier that he wasn't done, but I didn't know about his shoulder. That's tough. Also tough to catch shade from Cormier about your weight.

What's going on with J'Den?  I haven't heard much about him for awhile.  Is he still in the picture?  A non-factor?  Done?

His name was mentioned during NCAAs at one of the ESPN broadcasts, someone said he's still training at Michigan/CK. He's qualified for trials but idk if anyone has said which weight he plans to go at

Marable was a tweener. His ceiling was world champion.

If you saw Imar this weekend, you’d know he has no plans of competing. Nothing against him, but he has clearly moved on.

J’Den Cox will be at OTT. He was rolling with Davison at NCAA’s. My guess is 97kg.

Whoa, my heart screams in pain. IMAR only came within ten seconds of beating Jordan Burroughs in a best two-of-three series when Burroughs was un-Dakeable and completely non-Taylorable.

Moreover, a good underhook series was enough for Yazdani to win Olympic and World Championship Gold.

I think its crazy that if you win a age level silver/bronze you are not qualified. Perhaps not at u17's but for instance Jesse was not qualified until he won NCAA's because of his junior world silver.

He was close to doing the unthinkable, but training to beat one guy tends to be different than training to beat the world (see. Marstellar).
I maintain, IMAR was a PHENOMENAL wrestler!
Your name says it all, so I won't try to win a debate but..... no buts.

Side note: Iranians learn an underhook series designed for freestyle success, like American's learn unnecessary motion. So Yaz = underhook basically applies to any Iranian who wins. But I get where you're going, sometimes being great at 1 thing is enough. Burroughs heck Cael, John Smith. They didn't have a lot but they had something unstoppable

Anthony Knox registered and Jax Forrest mentioned that he was hoping to wrestle in this after he beat Larkin at boarder brawl would be rather insane to have 2 high schoolers at the same weight (Lilledahl qualified by taking 5th at senior nats) and 3 in the tournament including mirasola.

Especially a jacked up guy like him, skinny guys seem to compensate better, and squatty guys are generally sturdier but its hard for them to heal.

Yeah very disappointing for his wrestling career. Hopefully he can adapt for his competitive eating journey. If anyone has the wherewithal to take down Joey Chestnut it is Inception Imar (an Imar within an Imar who ate Imar)

That's how he has always naturally looked. No on seems to grasp just *how much* Uncle John makes his guys cut. I mean look at Cormier - no seriously, how much he cut for the Olympics was indicative. And Dieringer instantly going up to 79 post OkSt. And Pendleton. And Hendricks even moved up from 165 in college to 185 for UFC which is closer to 205 day of.

OkSt redlines their weight management and it alters their lifestyles permanently when they get away.

theres something true to that but its not that simple.

Cormier was openly braggin about how much mcdonalds he was eating and how he was 30 pounds over weeks before he made weight and defauted at the olympics. I get that you can claim this behavior was the result of brain damage from cutting weight, but its also cormiers fault.

Dieringer competed at 74 kilos for awhile, and the suspicious part of his accent after that isn't related to an eating disorder. And you'd be hard pressed to make a case that he or hendricks were at the wrong weight in college.

Like I said there is something to it but its become a trope that just people just drop as if it was set in stone, when every instance has its own complexity.
