Adding a little more about Lowell Lange:

"Lange won his first National AAU title while still at Waterloo West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. For three of the next four years, he reigned over the nation’s lightweight wrestlers. He claimed three individual NCAA titles at 136 pounds in 1947, 1949, and 1950, along with individual national AAU titles those years. Had he not suffered severe injuries in a car accident as a sophomore in the Olympic year of 1948, Lange likely would have become college wrestling’s first four-time champion, as well as an international medalist. Returning from injury as a junior, Lange swept through the 1949 collegiate tournament without surrendering a single point, perhaps the only wrestler to do so since scoring rules were adopted."

Of note with this is that Cornell didn't send a team to the 1948 tournament. Even without the injury he may not have been able to. I can't remember why exactly, but it may have been because of injuries so they decided to rest and wrestle AAU.

Watching the FB video, it seems that Lange was not the only guy injured in the auto accident.

Jay Hammond's summary in The History of Collegiate Wrestling confirms your assumption.  It states, "Defending champ Cornell of Iowa did not enter a team. The Rams were without injured NCAA champs Lowell Lange and Dick Hauser, and a number of other starters were not fully fit.  Cornell mentor Paul Scott decided to concentrate on the National AAU tournament, and the team did not make the trip to Bethlehem."

Didn't get a chance to jump on here yesterday so I will do 2 questions today. First:

Name the top-3, currently Non-D1, schools with the most AAs.

The answers were Cornell (IA), Southwestern Oklahoma, Mankato/Slippery Rock.

Question - We'll stick with current Non-D1 wrestlers again. Lowell Lange and Carlton Haselrig both won 3 titles attending non-D1 schools. Name the wrestlers that have won 2 titles.

In this day and age everyone transfers. That obviously wasn't always the case. 

Two-part question:

1. Who is the first to AA after transferring? 
2. Who is the first to become a National Champion after transferring?

Part 1:  No clue at the moment.  I'll have to do some digging.

Part 2:  Greg Ruth?  Competed at Lehigh through his Soph year (1959).  Spent 4yrs in the Army, then transferred to Oklahoma and won two titles (1965 & 1966)

Ralph Hammonds in 1928 
Harold Byrd in 1940

Both started at Oklahoma State.
