I saw a Facebook on Tom Elling's Wrestling Page that leads me to believe that Gettysburg (PA) HS could possibly be inspiration behind the often-ridiculed polo-wearing coach in Vision Quest.  The second photo below comes from the 1978 PIAA District III Section 1 program.
