Setting this Super Bowl thread up a little early because the suddenly Fearsome Turtles are (very slowly!) arriving to University Park to battle a hungry Lion.

They are also on a mean (nearly unprecedented) one match Big Ten win streak.  And they are led by an 8th Year (yes, you read that right) Senior Citizen at 285.  It's Turtles all the way down:

Achilles (Penn State) vs. the Tortoise (Maryland)

The Tortoise challenged Achilles to a race (match), claiming that he would win as long as Achilles gave him a small head start. Achilles laughed at this, for of course he was a mighty warrior and swift of foot, whereas the Tortoise was heavy and slow.

“How big a head start do you need?” he asked the Tortoise with a smile.

“Ten meters (points),” the latter replied.

Achilles laughed louder than ever. “You will surely lose, my friend, in that case,” he told the Tortoise, “but let us race, if you wish it.”

“On the contrary,” said the Tortoise, “I will win, and I can prove it to you by a simple argument.”

“Go on then,” Achilles replied, with less confidence than he felt before. He knew he was the superior athlete, but he also knew the Tortoise had the sharper wits, and he had lost many a bewildering argument with him before this.

“Suppose,” began the Tortoise, “that you give me a 10-meter (point) head start. Would you say that you could cover that 10 meters (points) between us very quickly?”

“Very quickly,” Achilles affirmed.

“And in that time, how far should I have gone, do you think?”

“Perhaps a meter (point)—no more,” said Achilles after a moment’s thought.

“Very well,” replied the Tortoise, “so now there is a meter (point) between us. And you would catch up that distance very quickly?”

“Very quickly indeed!”

“And yet, in that time I shall have gone a little way farther, so that now you must catch that distance up, yes?”

“Ye-es,” said Achilles slowly.

“And while you are doing so, I shall have gone a little way farther, so that you must then catch up the new distance,” the Tortoise continued smoothly.

Achilles said nothing.

“And so you see, in each moment you must be catching up the distance between us, and yet I—at the same time—will be adding a new distance, however small, for you to catch up again.”

“Indeed, it must be so,” said Achilles wearily.

“And so you can never catch up,” the Tortoise concluded sympathetically.

“You are right, as always,” said Achilles sadly—and conceded the race (match)

PSU has 3 guys from PA, Maryland has 2 guys from MD.  They both have 1 wrestler from the other state.

Maryland has one super Fan/atic, Robin Ficker (thankfully only one) and Penn State has none.

Bravo-Young should put himself to his back a couple times to see if he can get 40 points here

I was wonder if WKN knows what the most points scored in a folk match is when watching that.

Haines is a beast.  He's a true freshman who can throw many middling guys around and impose his will.
He's always looking for points and turns.

Pins the Maryland guy in the first period with a takedown to a cradle

19-3 at the break.

Sounds like Ball is in for Brooks at 184.

And MD's 197 lb starter (Smith) didn't weigh in

Jaxon Smith - is he injured? Seems like he's been out awhile

I do not. But now I am curious what the most in the TF era is. If you always let the trailing wrestler stay within 14 you could conceivably put up any score.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

Someone needs to tell Byers what an "Assassin" pinning combination is.
He's encountered this before and can't describe or name it.

He didn’t get it right when RBY did it to Foley a couple weeks ago.

Also, this ref has it in for Starocci.

Bartlett with a "workmanlike" unflashy 5-2 win.

Van Ness with a flashy tech fall 19-4 over a ranked guy

The Van Ness match did not look like a #13 vs a #18 match.  Van Ness is either underrated or his opponent is overrated.

Looks like you are right.  That has been his only match of the last month it appears.

I follow UMD pretty closely, and I have no idea. Smith disappeared from the lineup following the VA Duals, wrested vs Purdue on Friday, and was out again today. Terps also didn't wrestle the "other" Smith, North, or Best today. Sadly, unless you follow one of the big programs, we fans only get whatever info the coaches release- which in this case is nothing.

Pretty much across the board...

Fair enough. But if you root for Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, etc., there is at least some accountability- if a top-20 wrestler simply disappears from the lineup, sooner or later the coach/program will need to acknowledge it in some way or another, if for no other reason than the sheer volume of questions. With the smaller programs, no such pressure exists. At least that's always been my take on it; I've listened in on too many Flo podcasts that spent huge amounts of time puzzling over various injury reports from the big programs, along with the affect they may have on the team situation.
