I wouldn’t buy one but this kind of technology I find really interesting. It’s AI that we’re hearing more and more about that I’m hesitant to embrace.

I think this demonstration, though cool, is likely a scam.  I doubt Tesla delivers a single car with the cold gas thrusters in the next 9 years.  I doubt that either the version with thrusters or the fan system is ever allowed on public road.  The fan system would suck up rocks and debris from the road and expel it out the back.

There are additional questions about whether the cars used in the demo were fully functional versions of the car. It wouldn't be too surprising if they made a lightweight one off concept car that could flip with thrusters as in the demo.  Where it starts to get unbelievable is if a these were actual EVs with 300 miles of range each capable of doing all three stunts with an onboard compressor capable of refilling the thrusters.  They may have used strip down versions of the car in the demo.  They definitely used 3 different cars -one for each feat (0-60mi/hr, kickflip, and curved ramp). That may have been because of refilling time for the thrusters and each needing a refill after doing the demo. There were photos of external high pressure gas tanks at the demo there were presumably used to fill the thrusters on the car, but it probably takes some time even with those.  It's like none of the demo cars have an onboard compressor capable of refilling the thursters.

I viewed it more of a "look what is possible" kind of thing more than this is practical and something every day consumers will actually be able to buy.

Actual cars can be impractical and inaccessible to everyday consumers - most super cars are and many manufacturers make concept cars to show what’s possible or gain publicity that never go into production.  If the roadster was just an impractical inaccessible super car or a demo concept car I wouldn’t call it a scam.  But I don’t think it exists as it’s been described and I doubt it ever will yet the Tesla website is taking deposits for models with both the fan system and thrusters.  How many of them do you get delivered in the next 5 years?

What’s crazy is that 1000 people paid the full purchase price of $250,000 back in 2017 to reserve founders series roadsters.  Nine years later it would appear Tesla isn’t ever going to make that car.  Do they get one of the redesigned roadsters?  Which version?  Is Tesla going to ask for more money?  If I had to guess the models with the fan system snd thrusters never get sold to the public.  No earlier than three years from now Tesla delivers a car that has slightly better acceleration and top speed than what was quoted in 2017 but with half the range.  The original range was supposed to be 620mi.

Tesla had also promised ~80-100 second gen founders series roadsters to the top referrers in their old referral program.  If someone referred 55 customers that bought a model S or X they would receive a free roadster.  Referring 105 customers would get you two roadsters.  Will they actually make good on that promise?

Holy shit. I had no idea they were actually going to try to produce it. That is beyond impractical. Honestly I think some people just have so much money that they must not care. I wonder if these people signed contracts. This might make for an interesting read. I had no idea.

You can put your deposit down today.  $50k for the performance version with the fans or $250k for the thrust version with the fans and thrusters in the rear.  The rocket version with the 6 thrusters that did the kick flip and curved wall jump is invite only.  They haven’t announced the final price of any version yet.

https://www.tesla.com/roadster/reserve#payment

Nine years ago the former second gen roadster was announced with a price of $200k and could be reserved with a $50k deposit.  One thousand founders series were also offered for $250k, but those had to paid in full to reserve.  That is $250M in interest free money for 9 years if no one has asked for a refund. Being Musk doesn’t expect the new version to go into production until 2028 that will be ~11 years from the announcement at the Tesla semi event in Nov 2017 until the first car is delivered.
