The Eligibility Timeline for Jesse Mendez
  • The Baseline (March 2026): Mendez completed what appeared to be his final collegiate season for the Buckeyes, capturing his second NCAA Division I National Championship (141 lbs). Because he did not take a traditional redshirt year during his four years at Ohio State, he had completely exhausted his standard four seasons of athletic eligibility. [1, 2]
  • The Federal Injunction (July 2026): A U.S. District Court judge in Colorado issued a nationwide preliminary injunction ordering the NCAA to grant a fifth year of eligibility to Class of 2022 athletes who had wrestled four straight seasons. This immediately cleared the way for generational talents like Mendez and Penn State’s Levi Haines to return for the 2026–27 season.

    [1, 2]
  • The NCAA Appeal and Stay (August 2026): The legal victory was short-lived. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the NCAA's request to pause the injunction. This federal stay stripped Mendez and thousands of other student-athletes of their fifth year, rendering them ineligible just as the fall semester and athletics calendar were getting underway. [1, 2, 3]
  • DeWine's Executive Order (October 2026): Governor DeWine's newly signed executive order acts as a state-level bypass of the federal court pause. By decreeing that Ohio universities have the authority to grant Class of 2022 athletes an extra year regardless of NCAA rules, DeWine has legally cleared the path for Ohio State to reinstate Mendez.
Current Status and Next Steps
Because Mendez meets all the criteria outlined in Governor DeWine's order—he is 23 years old, has not signed a professional sports contract, and graduated high school in 2022—the choice to return now rests on Mendez and Ohio State University leadership.
However, because NCAA President Charlie Baker has explicitly stated that state governments cannot dictate NCAA eligibility rules, any attempt by Ohio State to field Mendez in official NCAA competition this winter will likely face swift legal retaliation or institutional sanctions from the NCAA.

Maybe since he did Not capture the 2026 NC They can get a continuum for the Baseline being false

Also of the 5 citations his ChatGPT gave, 2 link to social media and 1 links to a forum. Quite reputable.

People are never going to learn that these LLMs (Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Grok etc) are not some all knowing deity. They're just predictive models not unlike weather forecasting. Me see data point, me predict next data point.

they will chain data points together from different "sources" and eras and stuff as well. The AI platforms and agents are helpful and nice, but only if you pay attention and fact check some of the stuff and use them appropriately

For what it's worth, AI writes like 96% of my code at my data job (though I do read and review 83% of it) and I've gotten 2 raises this year. My manager, a vet at the company, and nearly 10% of our workforce got axed though so there's that

Is it true AI writes 99.9% of LJB's posts and 110% of rv's?

A state level executive order does not bypass a federal court pause. A lawsuit is the way to go. See later.

It did not - It was not "their" fifith year.  They had four seasons of eligibility under "their" rules.  The class of 2022 got caught between COVID years and the new 5 for 5, but they were able to get their 4 years.

If Mendez wants to wrestle this season, he needs to go by the playbook offered by two Oregon State football players - Wells and Patterson. They filed a lawsuit in Oregon State court and the judge granted a TRO. The judge then escalated  it into a preliminary injunction against the NCAA for breach of contract. They are able to play out the season under this while the whole mess gets figured out.

So many athletes pre-2018 were wrongfully stripped of their fifth years as well, unbelievable!!!!

As a Buckeye fan, I love having the chance to have Mendez on the team again, but I do not like the idea that only college athletes in Ohio get this extra year and nobody else. It is symbolic of the bullshit shenanigans happening across the NCAA.

I see some disrespect for Mendez saying he will only get as high as 5th at 141.

He's just been easy to forget. Wrestled one tourney since NCAA final I believe. I don't see disrespect as much as I believe he's just slipped off the radar. That goes right along with Ohio State. Folks aren't talking about them.  Willie has put some respect on them but OSU and Mendez are afterthoughts this season for sure.

He's currently listed on the teams roster (149) and in the team picture on the Ohio St Wrestling homepage. Although i'd love to see him vs Bassett, 149 is better team wise, and has the potential for several great matchups in March including possible revenge against Vega.

He's gonna have to challenge the NCAA ruling to get to wrestle. Roster or not...

After awhile it is nice to see other guys in the Mix.4 years competing is enough. The 5 year rule should only apply if you have an injury and can't compete in Nationals. If you have an injury or an Olympic year and don't compete at the nationals then sure you get a 5th year but that's it. 5 all Americans or 5 titles or 5 years at nationals is silly.

He got choked unconscious in RAF and still came back and won the match…I want people to keep overlooking him, especially if he comes back to NCAA

tOSU takes on a decent risk if they roster him. There is so much legal uncertainty as this stuff gets resolved and it would be a shame to see them forfeit duals or get in trouble with the NCAA for having a guy wrestle who is later deemed ineligible. That being said, having him back this year would be good for the sport.

Apparently this stayed in my drafts after I posted. I opened back up the browser and saw it all typed out so I pressed submit again. This is not the first time I've seen a reply in my drafts after posting, but the first time I accidentally double posted. Maybe this happens to other people?
