Look at it like this.

You go wrestle a dual, a wrestler will actually wrestle for ~7 minutes.  A wrestling practice is ~90-120 minutes.  So if you are trying to be "the best wrestler you can be", what is better time spent?  I will also say, practice can be fun.  Working on technique and seeing it improve feels good.  Sparing and live are fun during practice too.

I think HS kids are wrestling way too many matches now.  Some college programs have figured it out and are doing less competitions.  I do think at some point though, there needs to be some concessions for fans of the sport.  PSU and Okie St should absolutely be dualing during the season.  Big events like that are fun and build hype around the sport.

I liked the sport.
Loved my teammates
Loved the adrenaline rush
Hated the weight cut
felt a little bored by practices
Winning was always extremely important to me though.  Probably most important.
I can remember the names of almost everyone who ever beat me.  Because I also remember how it felt to have let down my family and teammates

I’ll admit didn’t read the original post.  Based on the premise of the post, I’d frame it up something like this:

I absolutely love the sport!  For the fight and the life lessons.  Fun might not be the consensus term.  It’s a freaking grind!  Winning is fun.  Bless the people that didn’t win much and stuck with it for its other values.  I could go on and on but I’m out of time and characters…

I got whooped a LOT but still loved it. I didn't know I loved it at the time, but the life lessons I learned (both mental and physical) were amazing and I carry that stuff with me all the time.

As for PSU, I bet they'd love wrestling even more if they took a few losses. I mean this genuinely. The struggle to get to the top lights a fire that's infinitely more satisfying than maintaining your position at the top. It's a tale as old as time in and outside of athletics.

Similar to what people said above, the original post is too long to read, but the question in the title is valid.

I can get my rear end kicked in softball or beach volleyball and still have fun. I cannot lose a wrestling match and have fun. It's only fun when you win.
