While in Cleveland this past weekend I spoke to some that are close to the program at PSU that said Cael splits all funds allocated by the school evenly amongst all wrestlers on the team. He did say they are free to pursue other endorsements and contracts outside of that which would vary by wrestler but as far as the program itself, he keeps things even for the culture aspect of the room.

He also said Bo called PSU and said he would sign there if they would just match half what the other schools were offering and Cael said he wouldn't do it.

Whether it’s believed by some here or not, if some of the first questions asked are about money or if parties are leading with money questions, PSU likely isn’t a fit for them.

The NLWC is its own entity and doesn’t factor into the University financials at all.

I know.   But I’m sure the NLWC is where a lot of the NIL payments are coming from, and if the NLWC did not exist then their donations would likely go to the university and thus they would make a profit.

The financials are separate. No funds are coming from the NLWC except for their expenses - like paying a wrestler on their roster. No NLWC money is going to PSU kids while they’re enrolled and wrestling for PSU.

As for how people are donating and if one didn’t exist it’d go to the other. 🤷‍♂️ PSU is on top of the world right now, highly successful program, it’s not shocking Kraft took care of wrestling and gave the 3rd biggest chunk of the revenue share. PSU wrestling is also probably bringing in more revenue than it ever has, so that makes an AD happy, but it still costs probably a few 100k more than it makes, but that’s part of the game. PSU supports like 30+ sports, think it might be 32ish, one of the biggest ADs in the NCAA, and the only program that makes money is football. Basketball (which is abysmal at PSU), hockey, wrestling, you just hope don’t lose too much and if they’re successful (ie hockey, wrestling) you deal with the loss because you have a winning program. No colleges are getting rich off Athletic Depts.

I am pretty sure that is a university decision.

I would be shocked if this were true.

Similar to how NLWC can take donations, I'd be shocked if the college wrestling team didn't have its own separate fund. For example, they obviously have a large alumni network and other ways of earning money. That would fall outside of revenue sharing.

Could there also be dollars from a separate fund outside of revenue sharing and NLWC the wrestlers get?

It probably is actually true that the wrestling club cannot provide money to the wrestlers on the PSU roster....however, remember that there is a booster club connected to both that can pay NIL. They still have to follow the rules of NIL and non-profit.

Messenbrink gets zero NIL money, no Revenue Share money either.

Or this

THE CEREBRAL ASSASSIN: Everybody has their favorite wrestler on the PSU team. I really don’t. I pull for all of them equally. Wanted ten All-Americans last yr. Wanted 10 national champions. Got two. I’m unrealistically-greedy.

Mitchell Mesenbrink looks like a grad student teaching a psychology class here. Hard to believe he’s only a junior. Going against the #5 wrestler Garvin of Stanford Saturday. 165 loaded with hammers.

Local businesses like Harpers & Lion Country Kia latched on to MM quickly. He is NIL gold. Like a mini- Bo Nickal.

Been giving away his tees like his takedowns: rapid-fire. Just mailed off a slew today to contest winners. Saw Coach Cael had one on yesterday. Like when Terry Smith wore the JOE409 Broken Ear Buttons. Magic.

Next contest is Friday. Hope to give away the final WWE/PSU belt. Handful of fans getting close to perfect. Another Mesenbrink prize to the closest. Maybe one of his blue tees!

Appreciate your patronage. #WeAre 🔵⚪️🏆💪🏻

OK. Without getting into the descriptive nature of grammar, usage, and mechanics rules, I will just offer my bi-annual reminder that the joke has run its course.

Well they still don’t seem to get it, so we keep telling it. I have it on good authority that Messenbrink gets the same NIL money and Revenue Share money as Spenser Li does.

I heard at one point, Cael was seriously considering opting out so that he could have a larger roster.

Not even. Autonomy conference schools (the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC...all-sports members, bear in mind) don't even have the option, they are required to opt-in. Non-autonomy schools can opt-in or out, for their entire athletic department (some conferences, the CAA comes to mind, required their members to opt-in).

Pretty sure the new Pac 12 conference is an opt-in conference as well.

So for wrestling does that only leave the MAC, SOCON, EIWA and Ivy as non-autonomy conferences?

The new Pac-12 is not an autonomy conference, they can choose to opt-out if they so desire.

Also, the autonomy/non-autonomy conference designation is for all-sports members of the four conferences that are autonomy, not the affiliate members.
