Flying Dragon?  Or was it Flying Tiger?  Lots of names have been kicking around here for a while.

I think TBar is/was an older guy.  I hope he's OK.

Vak is a good egg, my present criticisms notwithstanding.

Flying Tiger, that's right! 😂 TBar was here, but hasn't logged in or w(h)ined since 2023..

It is pretty well-documented.  You can see his mouth moving during matches.  Flo brought it up once and Askren confirmed and said he has experienced it and it is annoying.  (Although Ben would do it himself)

That's what I heard as well. Thanks for the confirmation.

Rewatch this video of the podium handshake controversy from another angle.  I hate to admit it, but it does look like Mesenbrink may have overstepped the boundaries of good sportsmanship.

You're such a PSU hater, Hurricane.  That slap was a reasonable reaction to his rejection of an outstretched hand.  Besides, maybe if Caliendo's head-hands defense and reaction time was a little better, he'd have parried it in time. A lesson learned.

Caliendo didn't learn his lesson the first 9 times, Mesenbrink had to put him in his place. (I actually vibe with Caliendo on this one tbh).

I also didn't have a problem with Caliendo ignoring Mesenbrink's proffered handshake.  Unfortunately, it was a bad look and the Internet jumped all over it.

Then, to compound the problem, his defenders reacted by attacking Mesenbrink, alleging he's a chode who acts foolishly (even taking issue with whether he shakes hands vigorously enough in his loses).

He wasn’t called a chode check your notes

I didn't call him a chode.  Foolishness is not the same thing as being a chode.  Considering when he wins it's these long, deep handshakes, and when he lost it was less than half a second, plus I was in the building, I'm fine with my assertion.  Feel free to watch the Burroughs 2024 semifinal for examples of foolishness in losses.

I want to be clear, I'm not criticizing him for reacting poorly, just pointing out that this was performative and condescending, in the same vein as when Nickal would pick the guys up, and is one of those things that's easy to pretend is magnanimous because you're always winning.

I'm throwing a brick. Doesn't look like MM gave him reaction time on the handshake.  🧱

I'm not going to call the kid a chode, but as to how he reacts in his (infrequent) losses, that's pretty well-documented.  It ranges from limp handshake to pure foolishness.

I think the direct quote above is there for you to read … I bolded it for you @Hurricane Wrestling

You're still off base.

I said "his defenders reacting by attacking Mesenbrink, alleging he's a chode who acts foolishly (even taking issue with whether he shakes hands vigorously enough in his losses)."   Defenders is plural and includes posters other than Vak, such as Not creative name who explicitly said "MM is a chode."

Moreover, Vak also said: "I'm not going to call the kid a chode, but as to how he reacts in his (infrequent) losses, that's pretty well-documented."  Sounds to me like he's saying that its documented that Mesenbrink is a chode, while simultaneously saying he's not going to call him one.  A distinction without a difference IMO.

Reason for edit: Caveria's kind of dense so I'm trying to help him out.

Mr. Caveira, you have absolutely zero evidence that I'm posting from a so-called burner account - nor can you produce any (particularly since I have no such account.)

Obviously, this is just something you're alleging to deflect from the fact that you've been repeatedly proven wrong and lost the argument.

Good night to you sir.

Mesenbrink is a Dbag. He’s a fantastic wrestler, but he also comes across as a super weird dude. Just because he won the tournament, doesn’t mean others need to take part in his little act.

Wow, 7 pages of debate to determine what a man’s non verbal stance actually meant. Everyone handles major disappointment differently. This young man did the best he could in his own way. I’d like to see MM who lately has diarrhea of the mouth publicly indicate he did not view the lack of handshake as a dis and that he understands what he was feeling. That would be the right thing to do after all that’s been said online. The Iowa wrestler doesn’t deserve any of what’s been said and MM could stop it today - should have been done the day after the match imo.

Maybe, but it might make things worse.  If MM made such a statement, his detractors would probably say it was just more "performative and self-aggrandizing" behavior by him.

Interestingly, the day after the match Bo Nickal posted exactly what you're suggesting MM should do (see below).  However, that doesn't seem to have tamped things down much.

It's an unfortunate situation.  I don't think either Caliendo or Mesenbrink is deserving of being maligned over this incident.
