Watching a ref on the phone for 10+ minutes at the end of Blaze and Davino was an embarrassment to the sport. The ESPN2 audience must have loved a great match being stopped on its tracks and replaced by a bald guy with a phone to his ear.

The crowd initially booed in favor of their OSU guy, then EVERYONE began to boo for how freaking long it was taking. Put a time cap on it!!

They problem here was not the long replay it was the officials making it about them self.

Let's all keep in mind this was a review of a 5second drop down count

5 seconds

They chose to take 5 minutes to look at a count. In no way, shape, or form would it ever possibly take  5 minutes to count 5 seconds. Those officials wanted there time to shine on the big stage and it was sad honestly

Full of un-bias blasphemy.

The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NCAA basketball have rules limiting stoppage time or to encourage efficiency in time stopped for video review. They have listened to the coaches, players, and fans and made adjustments since implementing review.

In wrestling it seems like the time of reviews has gotten longer and less efficient. They are momentum killers and poor conditioning enabling.

Get rid of replay.  If two refs can’t get it right then it’s too close to call.  There’s no way that wasn’t a TD for PJ and it was reviewed.  It was called correctly on the mat!

I would start a timer at 2 minutes the second they get to the table or call upstairs. No answer in the allotted time, the call on the mat stands right or wrong.

2 minutes is the length of a period.  Too long, no need.  We pay the refs for a reason and there are 2.  Get the best we’ve got and be done with replay.  It’s hurting the sport at this point.

I'm not disagreeing but am disagreeing.

Two minutes is better than ten, but I just grabbed a number. I don't know if two referees makes a difference as the international have three referees and they are at times less efficient than two.

I like the concept of video review, I don't like the implementation or management.

They let the cat out of the bag when they allowed it and don't know if it can be put back in. We can force it to be far more efficient and in turn less disruptive.

International refs are sitting in chairs. Don’t get me started haha.

I just think you can’t put a number on it when dealing with technology.  The problem wasn’t the ref thinking about what he saw, it was them being able to  cue up the video.  That alone took several minutes.  Then your head set doesn’t work etc. Video review takes an often unpredictable amount of time.  Scrap it.

Wrestling is one of the sports LEAST in need of replay. For important matches there are always two refs on the mat (1-1 player to official ratio!). The playing field is small so officials usually have a very good view. Stopping action takes away from the “no time outs” toughness of wrestling. That, and we’ve seen that calls are blown even when reviewing the tape!

abolish replay!

Feels like we've been saying this for years and it hasn't been getting better. IIRC, last year's finals ran for ~3.5 hours. Seems to be happening in all sports, though. Replays breaking up the action and eating up a bunch of time.

Change replay to the international system. If you challenge and lose, a point is awarded to the other wrestler.

Problem is that the refs need to do a better job getting it right the first time. Feel like this year reffing has been a bit rough.

Yes, you’re not going to get every call right, but there has to be improvement next year. If you can’t make a reversal on the review within a couple minutes nothing should change.  The long delay messes with the flow is and is a bad look.

I don't question the length of the finals but there is a contract to honor, awards to give and bills to pay.

Espn and NCAA have a nine figure contract to air almost every championship except football, mens BB, and women's BB.

When they schedule the finals they expect to fill a 3.5 hour block for ten matches. If they are all full regulation decisions that is 90 minutes with two hours left over. One commerical after start, one after each match in five minutes blocks that is 55 minutes at a minimum of advertising. That is pretty much non negotiable

In airing each match, begining to end, they sacrifice their regular schedules for a lot of live event broadcasting. A 9 inning baseball game will have shorter commercials but many more breaks, top, bottom, replay break, pitching change, etc.

People forget the finals use to air on edited replay or a set block that often included returning to matches in progress, periods completely cut out, or highlights from a few matches before sports became billion dollar businesses

With the action and commercials accounting for at least 2.5 hours the leftover hour is probably replays, recaps, talking about match results, previewing next match, recapping team race, recapping weight results, celebrations, injury time in the match, and the dreaded in match video review. This goes on with awards as well in the background between matches

Pins save time, overtime adds time, you hope there is balance to stick to a fifteen minute per match block for 2.5 hours and an hour of commercials.

Not saying I like stretching things out but am accepting and understanding the reality of broadcast production and bills to pay.

I believe finals was scheduled for 3 hours (still a little long) last year, but it ran way over last year because of reviews. Not sure about OT. Kind of like when baseball games run into extra innings. I get what you're saying about the necessary evil of commercials, etc. though.

You plan for the worst and hope for the best.  Session three was scheduled to end at 3 it ran til 410. Unless there is a live sport scheduled at three you let it run over on a live broadcast. If you got to switch over the broadcasters tell you to switch over to plus to continue live. Matcast and individual mats exist in a commercial free zone on ESPN plus and can run till conclusion.

Espn can schedule til 11 but they plan 1130. They can always add fill if it ends at 1045. Whenever they sign off they will role into sportscenter

Last night semis were on a broadcast network and had to fill a scheduling block. They stretched the matches unnecessarily to fill the window on the middle two mats or showed some conso action

Considering they ran four matches in the blood round and got the first seven weights of the quarters on the outside four mats in the time in took to air the 10 weights in the middle

I have been to enough ESPN and big ten ncaa broadcasts as well as speaking to or working around production to feel pretty confident about the way I have detailed this

Jason Bryant, Britt shp, josh bm, or Willie if he graces us could confirm or point out something I missed or overlooked or got wrong

I neglected to include matside winner or coach interviews to fill time
