I would have to say Johnny Thompson was my favorite. He showed that he was one of the most improved wrestlers from High School to college. For being only a one time state champ in high school, to a two time National Champ and a runner up.

I've read lots on the Forced labor camps. The Soviet Union outlawed the death penalty then staffed the work camps with psychotic criminals released from prisons. They were extremely cruel and many died from abuse, starvation and straight up being murdered by guards. The pure evil that existed was astonishing. The death toll wasn't even the worst part of it. Most who were killed were lucky to not have to endure the cruelty. The system of oppression was literally the only system in the entire country that was actually efficient.

I feel that people with those gifts would have capitalized no matter then era. The fact the sport wasn't as finely honed then as it is now doesn't mean Medved couldn't have excelled today with his apparent gifts and work ethic. As of today, Flo's rankings have McCort's 3 as the top 3 P4P wrestlers in the country. Time will tell if they achieve the same level of accomplishment as, for example, the Davidson trio, but if you're evaluating "best 3" from the standpoint of how good they are while in high school, I think you have to put the McCort trio as #1. I'm not sure if another high school has ever had 3 #1 ranked guys at their weight at the same time (at least not based on fishbane's list), let alone the top 3 P4P. Honestly it wouldn't shock me if this McCort team (on the strength of these 3) placed in the top 20 as a team in NCAAs in March, if they were allowed to compete.
